Comparing Jaw Surgery Quotes Without Missing Hidden Costs

I’m trying to compare orthognathic surgery estimates fairly, but the totals may not be describing the same treatment. One quote can look lower simply because orthodontics, hospital fees, anesthesia, imaging, or follow-up appointments are listed separately.

Before choosing a surgeon, I’m planning to request an itemized estimate showing:

- Surgeon’s fee and the hospital or surgical facility fee
- Anesthesia and required medical tests
- Imaging, surgical planning, and orthodontic treatment before and after surgery
- Post-operative visits, retainers, and possible hardware removal
- Deposits, payment-plan terms, and cancellation policies
- What happens financially if complications, additional treatment, or revision surgery is needed

Insurance is another major variable. I’d want the office to state whether the estimate assumes insurance approval, whether the procedure is being submitted as medically necessary rather than elective, and which portions may be excluded by the policy. Even with approval, deductibles, coinsurance, non-covered orthodontics, and facility charges could leave a substantial balance.
