I totally get what you mean about the “cooling” toothpastes—those sting like crazy, especially when you’ve got braces or sensitive spots. I ended up switching to a super bland toothpaste too, and it’s made mornings way less dramatic. Have you noticed if your kiddo’s breath changes with different foods? I swear onions linger way longer now that I’ve got all this metal in my mouth. My orthodontist said not to overdo brushing either, which surprised me... guess gentle really is better.

Funny you mention onions—my daughter’s breath after spaghetti night is next level now that she’s got braces. We definitely notice certain foods stick around longer, especially garlic and cheese. Her ortho said gentle brushing too, which felt weird at first, but her gums are way happier. I used to think scrubbing harder meant cleaner... turns out, nope.

- Totally get this. I used to attack my teeth like I was scrubbing burnt pans... turns out, not helpful.
- Braces + onions = a combo that could knock out a small animal. My nephew’s got braces and even his dog avoids him after taco night.
- Cheese is sneaky—sticks around way longer than you’d think. Floss helps but sometimes it’s just... there.
- Gentle brushing feels wrong at first but my dentist swears it’s the move. Gums definitely less angry now.
- Anyone else notice mouthwash just makes things minty but doesn’t actually kill the garlic?

Yeah, I had to unlearn decades of “scrub like crazy” too. My gums were always sore until I switched it up. Never thought soft bristles would actually do more, but here we are.

About the mouthwash thing—minty for sure, but garlic just laughs at it in my experience. Anyone ever tried those tongue scrapers? I started using one after a friend swore by it for smoker’s breath, and honestly, it helped more than I expected. Curious if anyone else noticed a difference with those, or is it just me?

I actually got a tongue scraper after my ortho put in braces, thinking it’d help with that weird “metal mouth” taste. Maybe I’m just paranoid, but I feel like it made my tongue sore and didn’t do much for the breath. Maybe I was using it wrong... or just too anxious about messing up my brackets. Still kinda sticking to gentle brushing and hoping for the best.
