Electric vs manual toothbrush after a root canal—what’s worked for you?

I’ve had a root canal on one of my molars and now I’m kind of paranoid about keeping it clean. I keep hearing mixed things about whether an electric toothbrush is better than a regular one for post-root-canal care. I switched to electric (Sonicare) but sometimes it feels too intense, especially around the crown. Manual feels gentler but maybe not as thorough? Anyone else in the same boat—what do you use and why?

I totally get the worry—after my root canal, I was super careful too. The electric brush felt a bit harsh at first, especially right near the crown. I actually switched back and forth for a while... Honestly, I think it’s more about being gentle and thorough than which brush you use. Don’t stress too much—just keep up with what feels comfortable.

I get where you’re coming from, but honestly, I couldn’t shake the anxiety about using my electric brush after my root canal. Even though people say it’s all about being gentle, I just didn’t trust myself not to bump the crown or irritate the area.

Maybe that works for some, but for me, the vibrations just felt too intense—even on the softest setting. I switched to a super soft manual brush for a couple weeks and felt way more in control. It was slower, sure, but at least I knew exactly how much pressure I was putting on the tooth.

I’m probably overly cautious (my dentist even teased me about babying my teeth), but after spending all that money and dealing with weeks of soreness, I wasn’t about to risk messing anything up. Still haven’t fully gone back to electric on that side... maybe someday. For now, manual feels safer—at least until everything settles down.

Totally get this. I was super paranoid about hitting my new crown too. Even with the “gentle” setting, my electric brush just felt way too aggressive right after the procedure.

Same here. I needed that control, especially since I’m always worried I’ll mess something up. Still haven’t fully trusted the electric again either... maybe I’m just overthinking it, but better safe than sorry, right?

I’m with you on the gentleness factor—right after my root canal, even the lightest electric setting made my teeth feel like they were rattling. I switched back to a soft manual brush for a bit, just so I could control the pressure and avoid that weird zingy feeling around the crown. Eventually, I eased back into using the Sonicare, but only after everything felt totally settled. Honestly, I think it’s just about what feels least stressful while you’re healing.
