Wax isn’t perfect, but at least you know what you’re getting.
That’s exactly why I stick with wax, even if it’s a bit of a hassle. I tried one of those gels too—cost me way more than wax and barely lasted through breakfast. At least with wax, you get a big pack for cheap and it does the job. Saltwater rinses are a must for me, especially when I’m trying to save a few bucks. Gels just aren’t worth the extra cost if they vanish so fast.
I get the wax thing, but I’ve actually had a different experience with gels. I thought they’d be a total waste too, especially for the price, but this one my ortho gave me (I think it was called OrthoEase or something?) actually lasted most of the day. Not saying it’s perfect—definitely not as cheap as wax, and you have to reapply after eating—but I found it stuck better to the brackets when I had a really sore spot. Maybe it depends on the brand or how much you put on? Wax is super reliable, but sometimes it just falls off for me, especially if I’m talking a lot or drinking hot drinks.
Saltwater rinses are a lifesaver though, can’t argue with that. I just like having options when my mouth feels like it’s been through a blender. I still keep wax around, but I’ll use the gel if things get really rough. Maybe it comes down to what kind of pain you’re dealing with...
Gels definitely have their place, but I’ve seen a lot of patients get frustrated with them because they don’t always hold up, especially if you’re eating or drinking often. Wax tends to be more forgiving for most folks, even if it’s not perfect. Sometimes layering the wax a bit thicker or drying the bracket first helps it stick better—kind of a pain, but it can make a difference. Honestly, everyone’s mouth is different and what works for one person might drive someone else nuts.
I actually had the opposite experience—wax always fell off for me, especially if I drank anything warm. The gel was a little messy, but it seemed to last longer and felt smoother against my cheeks. Maybe it’s just the way my mouth moves or something, but I found the gel less annoying overall. Guess it really does come down to personal preference.
Honestly, I’m with you—wax never stood a chance once I had my morning coffee. It’s like it just noped right out of there. The gel felt a bit weird at first, but at least it didn’t end up floating around in my cup. I guess our mouths all have their own little quirks... whatever keeps the cheeks from getting shredded is a win in my book. Glad you found something that works better for you.
