What foods did you give up or swap after getting braces?

“warm flour tortillas cut into strips can work if you want something a bit more ‘chip-like’—just skip the crunch.”

Yeah, I did something similar when I had braces—soft tortillas were a total lifesaver. I actually missed crunchy stuff way more than I thought I would, but at least my brackets stayed put. Tried cucumber slices too, but honestly, it’s just not the same with salsa or queso... the texture is off. I also swapped out popcorn for cheese puffs, since those melt and don’t get stuck everywhere. It’s all about minimizing risk and mess, right?

Totally get that—cucumber slices with salsa just didn’t hit the spot for me either. I’m actually getting braces next week and honestly, the idea of giving up crunchy stuff kinda stresses me out. Did you find anything that actually satisfied that “chip” craving, or was it just about getting used to missing it? I keep hearing about rice cakes but… not convinced they’re worth it.

Honestly, I felt the same way at first. The chip craving is real, and rice cakes didn’t do it for me either—they just kinda crumbled and got stuck everywhere. I ended up snacking on soft pita bread with hummus or those thin pretzel crisps (if they weren’t too hard). Have you tried baked snap pea crisps? They’re not exactly chips, but they’re soft enough and still have some crunch. It’s a bit of getting used to, but you find workarounds. The first few weeks were the hardest, but my cravings faded after a while.

Snap pea crisps are a solid pick, but I gotta admit, I still ended up missing the greasy, salty crunch of real chips for a while. Pretzel crisps were hit or miss for me—they’d sometimes get wedged in the brackets and I’d end up doing that awkward fish-face thing trying to get them out (not my best look).

I started cutting tortillas into triangles and baking them until they were just barely crispy—not quite the same, but they didn’t shred my mouth like regular chips. Also, baby carrots were a no-go unless I steamed them a bit first... learned that lesson the hard way.

Did you ever try those freeze-dried fruit snacks? They’re kind of crunchy but not as hard as chips—just don’t choose anything sticky or you’ll be flossing forever. Curious if people found any sweet swaps too, or was it mostly salty stuff that was tough to give up?

Freeze-dried fruit snacks were a lifesaver for me, but I totally get what you mean about the sticky ones—mango slices basically became dental cement. Honestly, I struggled way more with sweet stuff than salty. I missed chewy candy and even things like granola bars (those little oats get stuck everywhere). Did anyone else have a weird craving for stuff they never cared about before? I suddenly wanted caramel apples all the time, which was just cruel.
