Bananas are sneaky, right? I thought they’d be the MVP of soft foods, but nope—just weird mush. Applesauce was a hit for us too, though my kid got bored of it fast. Scrambled eggs were golden, but man, toast is just a trap for crumbs. Pizza countdown is real... I swear, brushing near the root canal felt like tiptoeing past a sleeping dragon for weeks. The brain definitely takes longer to heal than the tooth.

Bananas totally tricked me too—my kid made a face like I’d handed him mashed potatoes with sugar. He was all about applesauce for two days, then declared it “boring.” I tried to jazz it up with cinnamon but nope, still boring. Scrambled eggs were the only thing he didn’t complain about... until he spotted a crumb from toast and had a meltdown over “crunchy” food being dangerous. I get the crumb trap thing—why does toast create more mess when you’re trying to keep things clean?

Brushing was nerve-wracking for us too. My kid acted like his toothbrush was a medieval weapon. I basically had to narrate every move: “Alright, we’re just sneaking by the sore tooth, nothing to see here.” It’s wild how the mouth feels fine way before the brain stops worrying. Even after the dentist said everything was healed, he kept asking if pizza would “break his tooth again.” Definitely takes longer for the mental part to catch up. At least now he’s back to pizza and acting like nothing ever happened, but I’m still side-eyeing bananas...

That “crunchy food is dangerous” phase rings a bell—my niece flat-out refused anything with texture after her filling. It’s weird how the mind lags behind what’s actually healed. I’ve always wondered if it’s more about trust than pain, you know? Like, they remember that one time it hurt and now every crumb is suspect.

I’m curious, did your dentist recommend any specific foods during recovery or just stick to the basics? After my own root canal, mine suggested soft stuff for a couple days but honestly, I was back to normal food pretty fast. Kind of surprised me how quickly things went back to normal once I got over the mental block.

Also, brushing around sore teeth is a whole saga… I found using a super soft brush helped me, but kids are a different story. Did you end up switching toothbrushes or just power through?

Yeah, that mental block is real. I kept thinking anything crunchy would just wreck my tooth, even after my dentist said it was fine. She only told me to stick to soft foods the first day, but honestly, I was super cautious for way longer than I needed to be. As for brushing, I switched to a soft brush and still felt nervous. I can't imagine convincing a kid to be gentle but still thorough... it's tricky. Did anyone else feel like they were babying the tooth way past when it actually hurt?

I get what you mean, but I actually wondered if being too gentle was a bad thing? Like, I was so careful brushing and eating that I started worrying maybe I wasn’t cleaning it well enough. Does it actually heal faster if you just treat it normal after a couple days? My dentist said not to stress, but that’s easier said than done...
