the cost of messing up is way scarier than a boring menu

Honestly, I get that, but I was more worried about the pain than the food at first. Once the numbness wore off, I realized the soft-food thing was actually manageable. The bill though... yeah, my insurance barely helped. It’s wild how expensive it gets even with coverage.

Totally get where you’re coming from. I remember after my first root canal, I was more stressed about the invoice than the actual tooth pain. The pain was gone, but the sticker shock stuck around for a while. I had to stick to mashed potatoes and yogurt for a few days, but honestly, the relief was worth it. Still wish dental stuff wasn’t so pricey, though.

- Not sure I totally agree that the relief was worth the price.

“the sticker shock stuck around for a while”
—yeah, same here, but it made me wonder if there are cheaper options out there.
- I’ve heard some people travel for dental work, or look into dental schools. Anyone tried that?
- The pain going away is great, but the cost still feels kind of unfair to me.

I’ve actually wondered about the dental school thing too... but is it safe? Like, do they have real dentists supervising? I’d be nervous about letting a student do a root canal, but maybe it’s not as risky as it sounds. Has anyone tried cosmetic stuff at a school, like whitening or veneers? I keep thinking the savings could be huge, but I don’t know if my anxiety could handle it.

I totally get the nerves about letting a student work on your teeth. I was in the same boat, but I actually had a root canal done at a dental school last year. There was a supervising dentist right there the whole time, double-checking everything. The student took longer than a regular dentist would, but honestly, I felt like I got extra attention because they were so careful. Haven’t tried cosmetic stuff there yet—veneers seem like a big leap—but for basics and even the root canal, it worked out way better than I expected. The savings were real, too.
