I get that pain relief is amazing, but am I the only one who still dreads the whole process? I mean, after my braces got put on, I thought I’d be used to dental stuff, but root canals still seem like another level. And honestly, isn’t it weird how insurance covers some things but not others? Like, why does a root canal cost so much more than a filling? Maybe I’m just missing something...

I feel you on the dread. I swear, every time I walk into the dentist’s office, my wallet starts sweating before I even sit down. The price difference between a filling and a root canal is wild—like, are they using gold-plated tools for root canals or what? Honestly, insurance feels like a weird lottery sometimes. Mine covered half the root canal but wouldn’t touch the crown, so I’m still paying that off.

I thought after braces nothing would faze me either, but when they started talking about “drilling into the nerve,” my brain just checked out. At least with fillings you’re in and out pretty quick. Root canals feel more like a commitment… emotionally and financially.

Anyone else get sticker shock when they see the bill? Or is it just me being cheap?

My kid had to get a root canal last year and I nearly fainted when I saw the estimate. The dentist even joked about “not taking out a second mortgage.” Insurance barely made a dent, so you’re not alone. It’s wild how much more it costs compared to a filling—like, did we just buy a tiny car or fix a tooth? But honestly, once it was done, my son was pain-free and back to eating pizza within days. Still, the bill stings way longer than the tooth ever did...

That line about “did we just buy a tiny car or fix a tooth?”—I laughed, but it’s way too real. I’ve sat in that same chair, staring at the bill, wondering if I missed the part where they handed me car keys. My youngest needed a root canal after a playground accident, and honestly, the sticker shock nearly had me asking for laughing gas myself.

But you’re right—the relief after is huge. I remember my kid going from not sleeping and barely eating to scarfing down pancakes two days later. The cost is brutal, though. Insurance barely scratched the surface for us either, and I ended up setting up a payment plan with the office. Not ideal, but it helped soften the blow.

If it helps, some dental schools offer procedures at a reduced rate if you’re ever in that spot again. It’s not always convenient, but worth checking out. At the end of the day, seeing your kid pain-free is priceless... even if your wallet takes a hit for a while.

That’s exactly how I felt—like, am I paying for a tooth or a down payment? I always brace myself for the cost, even with insurance, because it never seems to cover as much as you’d hope. The anxiety before the procedure is one thing, but seeing the bill after almost made me want to crawl back in the chair and ask for more numbing. Still, having the pain gone is a game changer. I’ve heard about dental schools too, but honestly, part of me gets nervous about students working on my teeth... maybe that’s just my control freak side talking.
