I totally get what you mean about feeling more included when the students explain every step. It’s funny, I felt the same way when I started orthodontic treatment at a teaching clinic. They’d walk me through everything, and honestly, I ended up understanding so much more about my teeth and jaw than I ever did before. That “learning mode” vibe can actually be pretty reassuring, even if it takes a bit longer.

“I’d rather have a fresh set of eyes every time than risk someone missing something because they’re too familiar with my chart.”

I never thought of it that way, but yeah, sometimes having a new perspective helps. With ortho, I’ve had a few different students adjust my braces, and each one noticed something a little different. It was a bit weird at first, but now I kind of appreciate it.

Did you notice any difference in how gentle the students were compared to your regular dentist? I swear, the students always seemed extra careful with me, maybe because they were being supervised or just didn’t want to mess up. It made the whole thing less intimidating somehow.

Totally agree—when I had my root canal at the dental school, I swear the student was more gentle than my usual dentist. Maybe nerves, maybe just double-checking everything, but I didn’t mind the extra TLC. Honestly, I’d take a little more time for a lot less pain any day.

That’s such a relief to hear. I’ve got my first root canal coming up and, honestly, I’ve been losing sleep over it. Reading that the students were more gentle is weirdly comforting—I always pictured it being more stressful with someone less experienced. But maybe the extra attention is actually a good thing? I’d rather they take their time than rush through it. Pain is my biggest worry, so hearing you had less of it gives me hope.

I totally get where you’re coming from. I was in the exact same boat before my first root canal—couldn’t stop thinking about it, and every horror story online made it worse. But honestly, the reality was way less dramatic than what I’d built up in my head.

Here’s how it went for me: First, they numbed the area really well. I barely felt the initial pinch from the shot, and after that, nothing at all. The dentist (not a student in my case) kept checking if I was okay and explained each step as he went along, which actually helped calm me down a lot. I think the key thing is that they take their time to make sure you’re comfortable—no rushing.

About students being more gentle: it sounds odd at first, but I’ve heard that too. They’re usually super careful because they know they’re being watched closely by instructors. Sometimes that extra attention means they go slower and double-check everything. In a way, it can be reassuring knowing there’s a second set of eyes making sure things go smoothly.

Afterwards, I expected pain once the numbness wore off, but all I really had was some mild soreness—like when you bite your cheek accidentally. Nothing like the throbbing toothache that sent me there in the first place. Over-the-counter painkillers were enough for me.

One thing I wish someone had told me: bring headphones or something to distract yourself during the procedure if you’re nervous about the sounds. That helped me zone out and made the time pass faster.

Honestly, it wasn’t fun—but it also wasn’t nearly as bad as I feared. You’ll probably be surprised at how routine it feels once you’re in the chair. And yeah, getting rid of that pain is such a relief afterwards... makes you wonder why you stressed so much beforehand.

Hang in there—it’ll be over before you know it.

Totally agree with this—those drill sounds are honestly the worst part for me, not the pain. I’ve had three root canals (yeah, my teeth are drama queens), and I always bring a podcast or some music now. Makes a world of difference.

I used to be convinced it’d be like medieval torture, but my last one was so chill I almost dozed off. The numbing shot stings for a split second, but after that, it’s just weird pressure and some awkward mouth positions. The dentist kept asking if I needed a break, which was nice, though I think he was more nervous than I was by the end.

Funny thing—my first root canal was done by a student under supervision (dental school clinic). At first I thought, “No way am I letting a rookie near my tooth,” but honestly it ended up being the most gentle one yet. Like you mentioned, they’re super careful and double-check everything. Only downside is it took longer than usual because they stopped every few minutes so the instructor could peek in.

Pain-wise, after all of mine, it was more like a dull ache for a day or two—nothing some ibuprofen couldn’t handle. Way less intense than the actual toothache that sent me running to the dentist in the first place.

If you’re anxious about pain, mention it before they start—they can always give you a little extra numbing if needed. And don’t feel weird about taking breaks or even raising your hand if something feels off. Dentists are used to nervous patients.

Honestly, looking back I wish I hadn’t spent so much time dreading it. Once that infected nerve is gone and you realize you can chew again without flinching... total game changer.
