Totally get this. I feel like I’m always hovering, trying to make sure my kid isn’t missing anything, but it still feels like we’re playing catch-up with the plaque. The regular brush and those little brushes are helpful, but sometimes I wonder if we’re just spinning our wheels. We actually caved and got a water flosser a few months ago—it’s kind of a pain to use, but it does seem to help in the weird spots. Still, I’m never 100% sure we’re doing enough. It’s just stressful, honestly. I wish there was some way to know for sure we’re on top of it without having to wait for the next dental visit...

Yeah, totally get where you’re coming from. Those water flossers are a pain to drag out every night, but they do seem to blast out the gunk in places the brushes just can’t reach. I’ve seen some kids get lazy about using them though, especially after a long day—sometimes it’s just another thing to nag about. Honestly, I still wonder if it’s all making a difference or if we’re just going through the motions until the next checkup.

One thing that helped us was those little disclosing tablets—have you tried those? They stain leftover plaque bright pink or purple, so you can actually see what’s being missed. It’s kind of gross but also satisfying in a weird way. My kid thought it was fun at first, then got competitive trying to “beat” the dye. Not sure if it’s a long-term solution, but for a while at least, it made brushing feel less like guesswork.

I know what you mean about feeling like you’re always behind though. Even after all that effort, there’s still that worry they’ll find something at the dentist. I sometimes wonder if electric toothbrushes really make a big difference with braces or if they’re just hype. Anyone notice an actual change switching from manual to electric?

I was super skeptical about electric brushes at first. I mean, those things aren’t cheap and I figured, how much better could they really be than my trusty $2 manual? But after my kid’s ortho kept pointing out “mystery spots” at every checkup, I caved when I found a basic electric on sale (nothing fancy, just the kind that buzzes and makes your hand tickle).

Honestly, it does seem to help. My kid actually thought it was fun at first—like a mini power tool for your mouth. We still use the manual on days we forget to charge it, and it’s definitely more work to get the same clean feeling. I wouldn’t say it’s some miracle, but it seems to get around the brackets and wires better, especially with a small round head.

That said, I’m not convinced you need the super expensive ones with Bluetooth or whatever. As long as it spins and doesn’t sound like it’s dying, you’re probably good. Still gotta nag about flossing though... nothing’s fixed that yet.

Yeah, I noticed a difference too. I picked up a basic electric when my wires kept trapping food, and it made brushing feel less like a chore. The manual’s fine in a pinch, but I get lazy with it. Still, nothing helps with flossing... that’s always a pain.

Funny thing, I actually stuck with my old manual brush through braces and didn’t mind it much. Maybe it’s just habit after decades of the same routine, but I always felt like I had more control with it. Flossing though... yeah, that’s never fun, wires or not. Those little floss threaders help a bit, but I still grumble every time.
