Braces on a budget: monthly payments or upfront savings?

Yeah, I totally get what you're saying about the breakdown being confusing. When my son got braces last year, I thought monthly payments would be easier on our budget. But after sitting down and adding up the interest and fees, it was actually quite a bit more expensive than paying upfront. Like you said:

"Even though there weren't any hidden fees per se, the interest rates and admin charges added up in ways I didn't fully grasp at first."

We ended up waiting a few months to save enough to pay upfront... honestly glad we did.

We went through something similar when I got braces as an adult a couple years back. At first glance, monthly payments seemed like the obvious choiceβ€”less intimidating, easier to manage month-to-month. But once we sat down and really looked at the numbers, it was eye-opening. Like you mentioned:

"Even though there weren't any hidden fees per se, the interest rates and admin charges added up in ways I didn't fully grasp at first."

Exactly my experience. It wasn't until we did the math that we realized how much extra we'd be paying over time. We ended up delaying treatment for about six months to save enough to pay upfront. It felt frustrating at first, but honestly, looking back, I'm glad we waited. Not having that monthly payment hanging over our heads was a relief, and it freed up our budget for other unexpected expenses that popped up later. It's definitely worth taking the time to crunch the numbers carefully before committing either way...

I get your point about upfront payments being cheaper overall, but honestly, delaying treatment for months to save up makes me a bit anxious. For me, the idea of waiting even longer to fix my teeth feels pretty daunting... I'd probably rather pay a bit extra monthly just to get started sooner.

True, but sometimes peace of mind comes from getting it done and over with, you know? Guess it depends on priorities.

Totally get that anxiety about waiting... been there myself. Ever thought about splitting the difference? Save a chunk upfront, then smaller monthly payments afterward. Worked for meβ€”felt like a decent compromise without too much wallet pain. Plus, quicker smiles in selfies, lol.

I see your point, but honestly, even splitting it can feel stressful if you're tight on cash. When I got braces, I went full monthly paymentsβ€”yeah, it took longer, but it was way easier to manage month-to-month without feeling strapped. Plus, knowing exactly what I owed each month helped me budget better. Everyone's different though... whatever keeps the anxiety down is probably best.
