Making the switch: how I use my water flosser (and where I still mess up)

That’s funny, I used to think the same—just a messy gadget no matter the price. But have you tried using it in the shower? I started doing that after too many soaked shirts and honestly, it’s been a game changer for cleanup. Maybe it’s not for everyone, but it’s made things way less chaotic for me.

I totally get the soaked shirt struggle—been there more times than I’d like to admit. I switched to using mine in the shower too, but honestly, sometimes I still end up spraying water everywhere if I’m not paying attention. It’s less mess for sure, but I wish I’d figured out that trick way sooner. Cleanup’s a breeze now, but it took me a while to get the hang of it.

Haha, the water flosser in the shower trick really is a game changer—except when I get cocky and try to multitask. Once, I tried rinsing my mouth while also reaching for my shampoo... let’s just say I ended up with a face full of water and a very confused dog staring at me through the glass. Still, it beats mopping up puddles from the bathroom floor every night. Took me ages to figure out that aiming matters more than pressure.

That got a laugh out of me. My cat once tried to join me mid-floss—bad timing for both of us. I’ve found the shower trick helps my arthritis, but I still forget which way to aim. Pressure’s overrated if you’re spraying the ceiling... or your own ear. It’s taken me years to get the hang of it, but my hygienist says my gums look better than they have in ages. Worth a little chaos, honestly.

I’m relieved I’m not the only one who’s had water flosser mishaps. First time I tried mine, I somehow managed to spray the mirror, my shirt, and the floor all in one go. My partner came in thinking something exploded. I still get nervous every time I turn it on—like, is this going to be the day I finally master not drenching myself? Spoiler: usually not.

I’ve read about using it in the shower but honestly, I’m too paranoid I’ll drop it or accidentally aim at my face again. My orthodontist swears it helps with braces, though, so I keep at it. The difference in my gums is actually noticeable, even if my dignity takes a hit now and then.

One thing I still can’t figure out is how to avoid that weird ticklish feeling when the water hits certain spots. Maybe that’s just me being sensitive, but it always makes me jump. At least my teeth are cleaner, even if my bathroom isn’t.
