Retainer snapped in half—what now?

We had to deal with a week of “don’t lose progress” anxiety... not fun.

Totally relate to this. My retainer snapped right after my first adjustment and I panicked about shifting teeth the whole time. Here’s what ended up happening for me:

1. Called the ortho immediately—they told me to keep wearing the broken half if it fit (it didn’t).
2. They squeezed me in for a scan, but there was still a 5-day wait for the new one. That week felt like forever.
3. They suggested using my old clear aligner as a temporary fix. It wasn’t perfect, but it eased my mind a bit.

Insurance was useless for me too—seems like they only cover the first one, and that’s it. The backup idea makes so much sense now, even though I thought it was overkill at first.

About the plastic smell, yeah, totally noticed that! Mine had this weird chemical-y odor for the first couple days. I rinsed it a bunch and it faded, but it’s definitely off-putting at first. Not sure if that’s just part of the process or if some brands are worse than others?

That plastic smell is the weirdest thing, right? I always wonder if I'm just being overly sensitive or if it's actually a thing. My last retainer had that same chemical vibe and it took a few days to go away, but I still felt a little paranoid about wearing it. Did anyone else notice their teeth feeling a bit sore with the backup aligner? I tried my old one too and it was a tight squeeze, so I kept second-guessing if I was making things worse or better. The anxiety about shifting teeth is so real… I lowkey wish I had a backup now, but at the time it seemed unnecessary.

That plasticky smell always threw me off too—kind of made me wonder what I was putting in my mouth. I remember when my retainer cracked a few years back, I dug out an old backup and it was so tight I thought I’d break a tooth. Teeth definitely felt sore for a day or two, but my dentist said as long as it fit over my teeth, it was better than nothing until the replacement came in. The anxiety about shifting teeth is real, but a snug backup is usually okay short-term. Next time, I’m keeping a spare handy... lesson learned the hard way.

That plasticky smell is wild, right? I always joked mine smelled like pool toys. I’ve had to use an old backup too—felt like squeezing into jeans from high school. Not comfy, but way cheaper than letting teeth shift and having to pay for more work later.

Honestly, I get the urge to just tough it out with an old retainer, especially with how much those replacements cost. But I gotta say, I tried that once and ended up with sore gums for days. It was like my mouth was low-key mad at me. I know it seems cheaper in the moment, but if the backup’s super tight or warped, it might do more harm than good? My ortho warned me about using one that doesn’t fit right—apparently you can end up with weird pressure points or even crack a tooth if you’re really unlucky.

I totally get not wanting to shell out for a new one right away, though. The price is wild. But after my last mishap, I just sucked it up and got a new one made. At least the new ones don’t smell quite as plasticky... or maybe I just got used to it?
