That moment when your braces wire starts stabbing you mid-meal

Have you ever had it get infected from waiting too long? That’s my main worry.

I totally get where you’re coming from. I’m new to braces and honestly, the thought of an infection freaks me out too. I haven’t had it happen (yet, fingers crossed), but I did wait a couple of days once before calling my ortho about a wire that was cutting into my cheek. It got really sore and swollen, but it didn’t actually get infected—just super uncomfortable. The office said as long as you keep things clean and rinse with salt water, the risk is pretty low, but yeah... if it starts looking red or oozing, I’d probably panic and call right away.

I tried the nail clipper thing too, but it made me so nervous. Wax definitely helps for a while, but if it’s sharp enough to cut, I just can’t ignore it. Missing work is a pain, but it’s not worth risking something worse.

You’re definitely not alone in worrying about this stuff. Braces are rough sometimes!

I hear you about the infection worry—honestly, that’s been in the back of my mind too. I tend to delay appointments because of cost and work, but after my last wire poked through and left a sore spot, I realized waiting isn’t worth it. Salt water rinses helped me keep things under control, but I’d rather pay for a quick fix than risk a bigger bill later. It’s a tough balance, but you’re definitely not alone stressing over this stuff.

That wire poke is the worst—been there more times than I’d like to admit. I get what you mean about delaying appointments because of cost and trying to juggle work. For me, it’s always a debate: do I really need to take time off and spend money, or can I just tough it out a little longer? Usually, I end up waiting until it’s almost unbearable, then regret not going in sooner.

One time, the wire actually left a small ulcer on my cheek because I tried to ignore it for too long. Salt water rinses helped a bit, but honestly, eating was miserable for a week. I started using orthodontic wax after that, which gave some relief—though it’s not exactly a long-term fix if the wire is really out of place.

The infection thing is real, too. My dentist once told me even minor sores can get infected if you’re unlucky. That stuck with me... and now I’m way more cautious about letting things slide just to save a few bucks. It feels like you’re saving money by putting off the visit, but if something gets infected or needs more work later, it ends up costing way more.

Still, I sometimes wish there were better options for quick fixes that don’t involve missing half a workday or paying full price for what feels like a five-minute adjustment. Maybe that’s just wishful thinking? Either way, you’re right—it’s all about finding that balance between being practical with money and not risking your health.

At least we’re not alone in dealing with this stuff. Makes me feel a little better knowing other people are navigating the same weird calculus between cost and care.

Man, I’ve had that exact thought while sitting in the waiting room, knowing the ortho is about to snip a wire in two seconds and send me back out. It’s wild how something so tiny can ruin your whole day (or week). I tried the wax trick too, but after a while it just turns into this weird gummy mess if you eat or drink anything. Once, I actually tried to clip the end of the wire myself with nail clippers—probably not my brightest moment. Didn’t really work, and I ended up just poking myself in new places.

The cost thing is rough, especially when you know it’s a quick fix. I’ve started calling ahead and asking if they can squeeze me in over lunch or right before closing, and sometimes they’ll do it as a “courtesy” if it’s really minor. Doesn’t always work, but worth a shot. Still wish there was some kind of emergency wire kit you could get for home use, though... maybe one day?

Wow, I thought I was the only one who considered going full DIY with nail clippers. The temptation is real when you’re desperate, but I chickened out—couldn’t bring myself to actually do it. Wax is such a mixed bag for me too; feels like it helps for an hour, then it’s just... gone (or worse, stuck in random places). I get so anxious about calling the office, but I might try your tip about squeezing in during lunch. It’s wild how something so tiny can make you rethink your whole day.
