One-sided chewing after an orthodontic expander
If a child starts chewing mostly on one side while getting used to an orthodontic expander, how long is that usually considered an adjustment? I’d be interested in whether it matters if they favor one side even with soft foods, or only with firmer foods.
What changes in comfort or how the appliance fits would make you call the orthodontist before the next scheduled visit? I’d rather ask about a bite or appliance check than assume the chewing change is just part of getting used to expansion.

A change in how the expander sits is worth treating differently from ordinary soreness: if it feels loose, shifts, or no longer fits as it did, contact the orthodontist rather than waiting for the next scheduled visit. They can advise whether it needs an earlier check; don’t try to adjust it yourself.
