I totally get the struggle with sticky foods—honestly, I’m still figuring out what’s actually “braces-friendly.” I know applesauce pouches are convenient, but even the unsweetened ones seem a bit sugary to me. I’ve tried sending cottage cheese with diced peaches (packed in water, not syrup) and that seems to go over okay. Still, I worry about stuff getting stuck... My kid isn’t the best at swishing water after lunch, so I’m probably overthinking it, but it makes me nervous.

I totally get where you’re coming from—my kid’s braces have turned lunch-packing into a whole new science experiment. I’ve noticed even the “healthy” applesauce pouches spike the sugar meter, which bugs me. Have you tried yogurt tubes? They seem less messy and don’t stick as much. I wonder if those silicone food picks help keep stuff out of the brackets... or maybe that’s just wishful thinking on my part. Anyway, I wouldn’t stress too much about the swishing—half the time, I think we worry more than they do.

Funny you mention the silicone picks—I tried those for a while, but honestly, my daughter just ended up using them as mini swords for her grapes. Not sure they did much for the brackets, but at least lunch was more entertaining. I totally get what you mean about the sugar in applesauce pouches. Even the ones labeled “no added sugar” seem to have a ton of natural sugar, which feels like a lose-lose when you’re already worried about cavities around the brackets.

We’ve been doing a lot of cheese cubes and soft wraps lately, but I’m always second-guessing if wraps are too chewy. Yogurt tubes are a staple here too, though sometimes they get warm by lunchtime and then she’s not interested. Does anyone else’s kid complain about food temperature? I feel like it’s a constant battle between what’s safe for braces and what actually survives in a lunchbox.

Curious—has anyone found any good non-sugary snacks that aren’t just plain crackers? I feel like we’re stuck in a rut with the same three options every week.

Totally relate to that struggle. My son used to complain about “soggy” cheese sticks by noon, so I started freezing them—by lunch they’re just right. For snacks, roasted chickpeas (homemade, not too crunchy) have been a hit here, and they’re not loaded with sugar. Sometimes we do cucumber slices with hummus too, though he says they get “weird” if they sit too long... It’s always a balancing act.

That’s actually a smart trick with the frozen cheese sticks—never thought of that. I’ve tried sending yogurt tubes frozen, but sometimes they’re still half-icy by lunchtime... hit or miss. Have you ever done soft wraps? I do turkey and avocado in a tortilla, and my kid says it’s way easier to eat than bread when his teeth are sore. Do you worry about cost with things like roasted chickpeas? I find buying the canned ones adds up unless I get them in bulk.
