How I keep track of my gum check-ups (and wonder if I'm doing it right)

Calendar reminders are great in theory, but honestly, I still manage to snooze them into oblivion half the time. Anyone else? I’ve actually started booking my next cleaning before I leave the dentist’s office—forces me to commit, you know? As for floss picks, I get the appeal, but I swear they always break on me. Maybe I’m just too aggressive with them...

I hear you on the calendar reminders... mine just end up ignored half the time, too. Booking the next cleaning before leaving is exactly what I started doing a few years ago—less chance to forget. As for floss picks, I tried them, but honestly, good old-fashioned string floss seems sturdier for me. Maybe my hands are just used to it after all these years.

String floss always seemed like some kind of medieval torture device to me, honestly. My dentist handed me those floss picks at my first check-up, and I’ve clung to them like a security blanket ever since. Maybe I just have clumsy fingers, but the picks make it way less awkward—less chance of accidentally jabbing myself in the gums, which I’ve managed to do more than once with regular floss. I get that the string feels sturdier, but for those of us with questionable hand-eye coordination, the picks are a lifesaver... or at least a gum-saver.

I totally relate to this. I tried the string again after getting braces and it just turned into a tangled disaster—plus I kept poking myself and then worrying about infection (I know, probably overthinking). The picks are a little easier for me, but I always wonder if they’re doing as good a job? My orthodontist said as long as I’m gentle and thorough, it’s fine, but I still get nervous before every check-up. Anyone else track their gum health in a notes app? It helps me feel more in control when the anxiety kicks in.

- Floss picks are my go-to too—less circus act, more actual cleaning. I used to think they couldn’t possibly do as good a job as regular floss, but my hygienist said as long as you get between the teeth and don’t just swipe the surface, you’re golden.
- I do the notes app thing for gum bleeding or soreness. Makes me feel like a detective, tracking clues before the next appointment.
- Anyone else ever try those tiny interdental brushes? I gotta say, sometimes I feel like I’m just poking around in there for fun... but maybe they’re actually working?
- For what it’s worth, my dentist said consistency beats technique perfection. I guess that’s reassuring... or maybe it’s just what they say to keep us flossing?
