How do you cope with the ouch factor after gum surgery?

That metallic taste from pain meds is all too familiar. For me, it was worse with the codeine-based stuff—everything tasted like pennies for days. Switching to plain acetaminophen helped, but I had to trade off a bit of pain relief. I honestly thought I was imagining it until I read other people’s stories.

Totally agree on the humidifier, by the way. I didn’t realize how much dry air made things worse until I tried it. Also, for anyone bored of mashed potatoes: scrambled eggs with a little cottage cheese mixed in became my go-to. Not super exciting, but at least it changed things up a bit.

I get what you mean about the pain meds—funny enough, I actually had less of that gross taste with ibuprofen than acetaminophen, but maybe that’s just me. Everyone’s body reacts a bit differently. As for food, I never got into the eggs thing... yogurt with a spoonful of honey was my lifesaver. Texture was smooth and it didn’t stick to sore spots. Guess it’s all about trial and error till you find what works.

Yogurt and honey sounds like a solid move—wish I’d thought of it after my gum graft. I was so paranoid about anything getting stuck and causing infection that I basically lived on lukewarm broth and mashed bananas for a week. And yeah, the taste of meds… I swear acetaminophen always left this weird aftertaste that made everything worse. It really is trial and error, but honestly, if you find something gentle that keeps you fed and doesn’t irritate your mouth, stick with it. Just don’t push yourself too fast—slow and steady’s safer, even if it feels boring.

I totally relate to the paranoia about infection—after my own gum surgery, I was so nervous about messing up the healing that I stuck to smoothies and overcooked oatmeal for days. It felt endless, but you’re right, slow is better than sorry. That weird taste from meds is the worst... I tried rinsing with a little salt water (very gently!) and it helped a bit. Hang in there, it does get easier, even if it feels like forever at first.

That paranoia is so real... I remember after my gum graft, I was convinced every twinge meant something was wrong. Sticking to mushy food felt like punishment, but honestly, I think it helped me heal faster. The taste from the meds drove me nuts too—mine was almost metallic? Salt water rinses are a lifesaver though, and things really do start to feel normal again before you know it. You’re definitely not alone in this.
