Haha, I feel you on the cold foods thing. After my gum surgery, I was all set with a freezer full of ice cream and popsicles...ended up staring sadly at them while sipping lukewarm tomato soup. Warm wins every time.
Totally understand your struggle with the cold foods. After my own gum surgery, I also found that anything too cold just intensified the sensitivity and discomfort. Lukewarm soups and broths were definitely my go-to as well. On the bright side, the sensitivity does ease up graduallyβgive it a few days, and you'll probably find yourself cautiously enjoying those popsicles again. Hang in there, recovery can be slow, but it does get better.
Actually, I'd be careful about jumping back into popsicles too soon...even after sensitivity eases up, cold foods can sometimes trigger discomfort again unexpectedly. Maybe stick with room-temp stuff a bit longer just to be safe? Better cautious than sorry, imo.
That's a good point about cold foodsβI've seen patients underestimate how sensitive gums can stay after surgery. Even when things feel better, nerves can still be pretty touchy, and cold stuff can trigger that sharp, unexpected zing. Had a patient once who thought she was in the clear, went straight for ice cream, and regretted it big time. Took her another week to feel comfortable again.
Honestly, I'd even be cautious with overly hot foods too. Extreme temperatures in either direction can irritate healing gums. Maybe lukewarm soups or smoothies at room temp could be a safer bet for now? Curious if anyone's found certain foods particularly soothing during recovery...
"Maybe lukewarm soups or smoothies at room temp could be a safer bet for now?"
Yeah, room-temp smoothies were my go-to after gum surgery. I found blending bananas, avocado, and almond milk worked pretty wellβsmooth texture, not too acidic, and filling enough to keep hunger away. Also, mashed sweet potatoes at lukewarm temp were surprisingly soothing and easy to handle.
One thing I'd caution against is anything with tiny seeds or gritty textures (like strawberries or raspberries). Even blended, those little bits can sneak into sensitive spots and cause irritation. Learned that the hard way...
