That first week after wisdom teeth removal… did anyone else swear by ice packs?

I’m with you on the bag-of-whatever’s-in-the-freezer method. I tried those blue gel packs once and my skin got all blotchy—plus, they never stayed cold as long as a good ol’ bag of corn. Honestly, I just wrapped whatever I found in a towel and hoped for the best. Dental bills are high enough, like you said… spending extra on “special” ice packs felt kind of pointless. The veggie smell is real, though—I remember my partner asking if I’d been cooking when all I’d done was nap with frozen green beans on my face.

I get what you mean about the veggie smell—after my surgery, I used a bag of frozen peas and the scent definitely lingered for a while. I actually tried those fancy gel packs too, but they seemed to lose their coldness really fast compared to whatever random frozen food I grabbed. Plus, I noticed my skin got a bit irritated, maybe from the direct contact or just the material itself.

One thing I wondered about: did anyone else have issues with swelling even when using ice? I followed the “20 minutes on, 20 minutes off” advice, but honestly, my cheeks still ballooned up like crazy. Maybe it’s just genetics or how complicated the extraction was... Still, it felt like all that icing didn’t do much besides make me smell like mixed vegetables for a week.

Curious if anyone found a method that actually reduced swelling noticeably. Or maybe it’s just one of those things you can’t fully avoid?

I totally get what you mean about the swelling. I did everything by the book—ice packs, elevation, soft foods, you name it—but my cheeks still looked like I was storing snacks for winter. I remember thinking, “Is this just how it goes, or am I doing something wrong?” Honestly, I think some of us just swell up more, especially if the teeth were tricky to get out.

The veggie smell is so real, too. I used corn once and the scent lingered on my pillow for days. My dentist said the ice mostly helps with discomfort and maybe keeps swelling from getting worse, but it doesn’t always prevent it entirely. Warm compresses after a couple days helped me more than ice, weirdly enough.

Hang in there—it does get better, even if you feel like a chipmunk for a while.

That veggie smell is wild, right? I used frozen peas and honestly, it felt like it stuck around forever. Swelling’s so unpredictable—sometimes you do everything “right” and still end up puffy. Warm compresses helped me too after a couple days. It’s just a weird healing process.

Man, the frozen pea smell is no joke. I tried using a bag of corn once—bad idea, smelled like a microwaved dinner for three days. Swelling’s a crapshoot, honestly. Some folks barely puff up, others look like chipmunks no matter how much ice they use. Warm compresses did more for me once the worst was over, but those first 48 hours? Ice packs were my best friend. Still, nothing really prepares you for how weird your face feels...
