How do you clean around a bonded retainer without irritating your gums?

I’m trying to maintain healthy gums around a fixed retainer, especially where the wire is bonded behind the lower front teeth. Regular floss catches, while a floss threader or interdental brush can feel awkward and sometimes leave the gum tender.

For people with bonded retainers, which tool and routine work best for removing plaque without bending the wire or irritating the gumline? Also, if bleeding or swelling keeps occurring in one specific spot despite careful cleaning, how long should you try adjusting your technique before booking a dental check?
