I get where you’re coming from. Those official cases they give you at the ortho are always a little clunky, but honestly, I’d take that over digging through a greasy napkin in my bag any day. I actually tossed my retainer once in a food court trash can because I wrapped it up with my burger wrapper—didn’t realize until hours later. That was a fun phone call to the orthodontist...

The plastic takeout container hack is pretty clever, though. I’ve used a little Tupperware when I couldn’t find my case, and as long as it closes tight, it gets the job done. Not exactly stylish, but at least you know where it is (and it’s not getting squished or accidentally chucked out).

Mini safes sound fancy, but I’m with you—last thing I want is to hold up the TSA line while sweating over a combo lock. Plus, those things are heavier than they look.

Here’s what I usually do now when traveling:
1. Stick with a hard-shell case (if you still have the one they gave you, even better).
2. Toss it in an outer pocket of my backpack or purse so I don’t lose track of it.
3. Bring some denture cleaning tablets and a travel toothbrush—hotel sinks are not ideal for cleaning retainers.
4. Keep a backup container (even just a Ziploc bag) in case the main one cracks or gets gross.
5. If you’re on a plane or bus and have to take your retainer out for snacks, put it straight in the case—not on the tray table or in your pocket (learned that one the hard way).

It’s not glamorous, but honestly, keeping it clean and not losing it is way more important than how cool the container looks. And yeah... anything is better than fishing around for something slimy in your bag because you “just set it down for a second.”

I relate to the hotel sink struggle—those things never seem clean enough for retainers. I’ve started carrying a small bottle of mouthwash to rinse mine if I can’t properly clean it while traveling. Has anyone noticed their retainer picking up weird smells after flights? I’m always paranoid about that.

That “mystery retainer odor” after flights is all too real. Airplane cabins are like little petri dishes—dry air, recycled everything, and nowhere for bacteria to go but wild. I’ve tried the mouthwash trick too, but sometimes it just smells... weird. I started using those dissolvable retainer cleaning tablets in a travel cup—takes up almost no space and feels a bit more clinical than rinsing in a questionable sink. It’s not perfect, but at least I don’t feel like I’m wearing a science experiment in my mouth.

That “mystery odor” is truly baffling—my kid complains about it every single trip. I’ve wondered if it’s just the plane air or something we’re doing wrong. We tried mouthwash too, but it always leaves this odd aftertaste. The cleaning tablets sound practical, especially when you don’t trust the airport sinks... I might give those a try next time. Honestly, it’s a relief to hear other people deal with this, not just us.
