How I pack and care for my retainer when traveling—step by step

I tried one of those UV sterilizer boxes after I got tired of my retainer case smelling like a gym bag, and honestly... I’m not convinced it’s much better than just letting it air dry. In humid places, though, air drying can be kind of a nightmare—my case stayed damp for ages in Florida. Sometimes I’ll toss in a silica gel packet (the kind from new shoes), but then it just smells like weird plastic instead. Not sure there’s a perfect solution, but at least it beats the “mystery funk” that builds up if you forget about it for a day or two.

Ugh, that “mystery funk” is my worst nightmare. I’m always paranoid I’ll open my case and get hit with that smell in public. I tried those denture cleaning tablets once—my retainer came out tasting like minty chemicals for days. Anyone else ever just wrap theirs in a napkin in a pinch and then totally panic about losing it? I swear, traveling with this thing is like babysitting a very small, expensive pet... Has anyone found a case that actually dries stuff out without making it smell like plastic?

That napkin trick is way too risky—I've seen so many retainers end up in the trash that way. I get the struggle with the cases, though. I usually recommend a ventilated retainer case (the ones with little holes), but you still have to dry your retainer really well before putting it in. Otherwise, it just traps the moisture and, yeah... funk city. As for the plastic smell, letting the case air out overnight helps a bit, but I haven't found a case that dries and deodorizes at the same time without adding weird scents. Still searching for the holy grail there.

I hear you on the napkin thing—lost a retainer at a restaurant once and had to dig through the bin. Never again. For travel, I always bring two cases (just in case one gets gross or lost), plus a tiny travel towel to dry mine off before stashing it. If the case starts smelling weird, I rinse it with warm water and let it sit open in the hotel bathroom overnight. Not perfect, but it keeps things fresher than just snapping it shut right away. Haven’t found a magic solution for the plastic smell either... guess we just have to live with that one for now.

Not sure I totally agree about just living with the plastic smell—I've actually found a workaround that helps a bit.

I've started packing a couple of those denture cleaning tablets (the fizzy kind) when I travel. If my case or retainer starts smelling funky, I just drop one in a cup of water and let it soak for a few minutes. It doesn't get rid of *all* the plastic scent, but it definitely takes the edge off and leaves things feeling fresher. Plus, it's easy to do in any hotel sink.

I do get what you mean about leaving the case open overnight—sometimes that helps, sometimes it just makes the bathroom smell weird instead. And yeah, double-casing is smart, but I always seem to lose one anyway... Murphy's law or something.

Also, random tip: if you're in a pinch and don't have your towel, paper towels work okay for drying, as long as you let them air out after.
