How I pack and care for my retainer when traveling - step by step
I’m so relieved I’m not the only one who gets weirded out by that cloudy film. I kept thinking maybe I was cleaning it wrong or missing a step. I tried the alcohol-free mouthwash too (my dentist suggested it), but honestly, it still left some kind of residue. Not as harsh, but definitely not squeaky clean. I agree, it’s probably more about how the retainer stays damp, especially if it’s wrapped in any kind of tissue or napkin. I did that once at a restaurant and the tissue sort of stuck to it - gross.
Now I just keep a little travel case in my bag, even if it’s a pain to remember. I started putting a tiny silica gel packet (the kind you get with shoes) in the case sometimes, hoping it keeps things drier, but I have no idea if that actually helps or if it’s just wishful thinking. At least it makes me feel like I’m trying! Anyway, you’re totally not alone with this. The struggle is real.
That cloudy film is a pain, isn’t it? I see a lot of people run into the same issue, even when they’re following all the cleaning steps. Alcohol-free mouthwash can help with odor, but it doesn’t always prevent buildup. Honestly, wrapping a wet retainer in tissue just makes things worse - paper fibers get stuck and it stays damp longer. The travel case is definitely the way to go. As for silica gel packets, they might help keep things drier, but just make sure they don’t touch your retainer directly. Sometimes I tell patients to let their retainer air dry before putting it back in the case if time allows... not always practical on the go, but it does cut down on that weird film.

Right? I learned that one the hard way after pulling off what felt like half a napkin from my retainer at an airport. The travel case is definitely less gross. Has anyone tried those little vented cases? I swear mine helps with drying, but maybe it’s just wishful thinking. And about the silica packets - does anyone else get paranoid about those bursting open? I keep mine in a tiny mesh bag just in case.

Totally get the paranoia about silica packets. I always double-check mine, just in case. The vented cases do seem to help a bit, but I’m never sure if it’s actually drying faster or if I just want to believe it. Either way, way better than soggy tissue...

Honestly, I’m not totally sold on the vented cases. I used one for a while, and yeah, my retainer didn’t feel as gross as when I stuffed it in tissue (which is a nightmare if you accidentally toss it out), but I still noticed some moisture hanging around. Maybe it’s just me, but unless I actually leave the case open a crack, it doesn’t fully dry out.
About the silica packets - I get the paranoia too, but I’ve never had one burst. Still, I kinda hate the idea of keeping chemicals near something that goes in my mouth. I actually switched to using a little microfiber cloth inside the case. It soaks up extra moisture, and I just toss it in the wash every few days. Might not be for everyone, but at least I don’t have to worry about weird packet residue or anything.
Just my two cents. For me, nothing beats a quick rinse and letting it air dry whenever possible... which is tough when you’re on the go, but I’d rather deal with that than mystery dampness.
