Totally agree about gas station sinks—my kid’s retainer case has definitely seen things I’d rather not think about. Do you ever just stand there and wonder if it’s even worth rinsing, or if you’re just swapping one set of germs for another? I try to keep a stash of those little alcohol wipes, but half the time I forget them at home. Is that overkill, or does everyone do that?

The AirTag idea is smart. My daughter lost hers at a trampoline park once and we spent an hour digging through the foam pit. Never again. Now we use a bright neon sticker on the case, but maybe a tracker is better. Have you had any issues with the tracker falling off, or is it pretty secure?

Also, I’ve had to remind my kid so many times about the hot water thing. She thinks “hotter = cleaner” and nearly melted her last retainer. Why is it so hard to convince kids that lukewarm is enough? Maybe I’m just paranoid, but I’d rather nag than pay for a replacement...

Gas station sinks are the worst, right? I’ve definitely had that “is this even helping?” moment, especially after a road trip pit stop. I started tossing a couple of those little alcohol wipes in every bag after my son dropped his retainer case on a bathroom floor that looked... questionable. I don’t think it’s overkill at all, but I’m also the person who wipes down airplane tray tables, so maybe I’m just extra. The wipes are a lifesaver when you remember them, but I still forget half the time too.

About the tracker—I actually tried a Tile sticker on my kid’s retainer case. It’s held pretty well, but we did lose one after it got banged around in a backpack. Now I just loop a cheap keychain through the hinge, and that seems to help keep it attached. Bright colors help too, but honestly, nothing beats a tracker when you’re digging through a ball pit or under car seats.

And the hot water thing... I’ve given up trying to explain it logically. My daughter’s convinced that hotter is always better, and we’ve had one melted retainer as proof. At this point, I just remind her (again) every time she cleans it, because I'd rather sound like a broken record than have to order another one.

Honestly, I don’t think you’re being “extra” at all with the wipes. I carry a stash myself—learned my lesson after a rest stop in Kansas where the soap dispenser was just... empty. Alcohol wipes are a must, but I’ll admit I’ve used bottled water and a paper towel in a pinch.

On trackers, I’ve tried both the sticker kind and the keychain loop. The sticker always comes off eventually, especially if you’re tossing the case around. The keychain’s less hassle, though I wish someone would invent a retainer case with a built-in tracker already.

And hot water—don’t get me started. My granddaughter melted hers last summer. Lukewarm is all you need, but somehow “boiling = clean” is hard to shake for kids (and honestly, some adults).
