I’m the same way about bringing a cleaning kit. I just don’t trust random hotel bathrooms to be clean enough, and I’ve seen some pretty sketchy setups. I also throw in a travel toothbrush just for my retainer—feels like overkill but it’s saved me from some gross situations.

I get the urge to bring a full cleaning kit, but honestly, I think I’ve just gotten lazy with it over time. I used to be super paranoid about hotel bathrooms too—like, the first thing I’d do is wipe everything down before even touching my toothbrush. But after a few trips where I forgot half my “kit” and just had to roll with whatever was there, I realized most hotel sinks are fine if you give them a quick rinse. Haven’t had a retainer disaster yet (knock on wood).

The travel toothbrush for your retainer sounds smart, but I just use my regular one for both—maybe that’s kinda gross, but it saves space and I haven’t noticed any weird taste or anything. Worst case, I’ll grab a disposable toothbrush from the lobby or a local shop if things look especially sketchy. Maybe I’m playing with fire, but so far, so good...

I hear you on the hotel bathroom paranoia—I used to travel with those little disinfectant wipes and basically stage a one-person cleaning crew before I’d even unpack. At some point, I just got tired of hauling half my bathroom with me. I’ve also doubled up on my regular toothbrush for my retainer, and honestly, as long as you rinse it well, I don’t see the harm. Is it a little gross? Maybe. But I figure if it hasn’t caused a retainer meltdown yet, it’s probably fine. Anyone else ever worry more about losing the retainer than cleaning it? That’s where I’m always sweating...

Losing the retainer is my actual nightmare. I’ve definitely spent more time frantically checking hotel nightstands and digging through my bag than worrying about how clean it is. I’ll admit, I still toss mine in a ziplock if I’m in a rush—probably not the most hygienic, but like you said, no disasters yet. Anyone else stash theirs in weird places just to keep it safe? I once found mine in my shoe...

That’s honestly my biggest fear too—losing it somewhere weird and not realizing until it’s too late. I get anxious just thinking about it. I usually keep mine in the case, but I’ve wrapped it in a napkin before and nearly tossed it out. No judgment on the ziplock… sometimes you’ve just gotta improvise to keep it from vanishing.
