Retainer glued in or popping one in and out?

Did you ever worry about forgetting to put the removable one in? That’s my main hesitation…

Totally get that concern. I had a removable retainer for years, and honestly, yeah—I forgot it a bunch at first. It’s easy to leave it out after meals or if you’re tired at night. But after a while, it just became routine, like brushing teeth. The glued-in one was way more annoying for me because flossing around it was such a pain... My teeth felt cleaner with the removable. But if your kid tends to lose things, maybe glued-in is safer?

- Agree with a lot of this—remembering the removable retainer is definitely a hurdle at first.
- One thing I’ve noticed: some kids (and adults, honestly) just never get into the habit, no matter how much you remind them. If your kid’s forgetful or super busy, a glued-in one might be less stressful overall.
- The cleaning part is real, though... Flossing with a permanent retainer drove me nuts. Threaders help, but it’s still a hassle.
- For me, I lost my removable retainer at school twice. Not cheap to replace. If your kid’s responsible, removable feels cleaner and more comfortable. If not, glued-in is probably safer in the long run.

Losing a retainer at school is such a classic move—I did it in the cafeteria once and had to dig through the trash. Not my finest hour. I totally get the appeal of the glued-in ones just to avoid that drama, but honestly, the flossing situation is rough. I used to dread it so much that I’d just skip some nights (don’t tell my orthodontist).

I feel like it comes down to what kind of hassle you can live with: the “where did I put my retainer?” panic or the “why is this piece of metal impossible to clean?” frustration. For me, I eventually got used to popping the removable one in and out, but it took a few months (and a lot of sticky notes). Anyone else get weird looks pulling their retainer out at lunch? Or is that just me being awkward?

That’s a huge trade-off, honestly. Fixed retainers are great for not losing them but yeah, flossing gets tricky—most people need to use those threaders or special picks. Did you ever try using a water flosser with yours? Some patients say it helps, but others find it just as annoying. I’m curious if anyone here found a cleaning routine that actually stuck.

I’ve had a glued-in retainer for years and honestly, flossing is such a pain. I tried those threaders but got lazy after a while. Water flosser helped a bit, but it never felt as thorough. I just kind of settled for regular brushing and occasional flossing when I could be bothered… not ideal, but at least I never lost the retainer.
