What’s a good way to clean along the gumline around a crowned tooth that’s had a root canal, especially if the crown’s shape makes the edge awkward to reach? I’d expect plaque to need attention there, but brushing or flossing shouldn’t mean forcing anything into tender gums.

Does the crown’s contour or position change whether a soft brush, floss, or another cleaning aid is easiest to use without irritating the gum? I’m also curious how you’d distinguish brief, mild tenderness from bleeding or swelling that keeps happening and should be checked by a dentist. Care might be different for a temporary crown, or if the dentist gave specific instructions.

I’m trying to understand the timing after a root canal, rather than just comparing the restoration prices. If the dentist recommends a temporary filling now and a crown or onlay at a later appointment, what usually determines how long that temporary can safely stay?

I’m especially wondering whether the answer changes for a molar, since it takes more chewing force than a front tooth. I can see the practical appeal of waiting for the next appointment, but I’m also concerned about the temporary leaking, wearing down, or the tooth fracturing before the permanent restoration is placed. On the other hand, if enough tooth structure remains, would completing a permanent filling at the same visit ever be reasonable instead of scheduling a crown or onlay?

For anyone discussing this with their dentist, I’d want to ask:

- Is the tooth a molar or front tooth, and how much natural structure is left?
- Exactly how long is the temporary filling expected to remain?
- Is the planned final restoration a crown, onlay, or filling, and why?
- Should I avoid chewing on that side until the final restoration?
- What signs mean the temporary needs attention sooner, such as a loose filling, a new bite problem, or worsening sensitivity?

I’m trying to balance appointment availability and cost against protecting the tooth. Does the dentist’s recommended timeline usually depend more on the restoration plan and remaining tooth structure than on the root canal itself?

My jaw’s still kinda sore and I’m low-key paranoid about messing it up or eating the wrong thing. I’ve been sticking to soft foods and trying not to chew on that side, but I feel like I’m missing something.

Anyone got any little tricks or comfort things that helped you bounce back? Like, did you use ice packs or just tough it out? Is it normal for it to feel kinda weird for a week? Also, how long did you wait before eating anything crunchy again? Would love to hear what actually worked for people instead of just what Google says.

Root canals used to be my worst nightmare - like, I’d rather do my taxes with a toothache than sit in that chair. But last month, I finally had to face the music. My dentist offered me nitrous oxide (laughing gas), and honestly, it was a total game changer. I was super anxious going in, but once the mask was on, it felt like I was floating and the whole thing was way less scary. I could still hear and talk, but the edge was totally gone. The best part? I didn’t feel groggy after, just kind of mellow for a bit.

I’d always thought you had to go full IV sedation for something like a root canal, but this was so much easier and didn’t wreck my whole day. I even stopped for an iced coffee on the way home (probably not dentist-approved, but hey).

Anyone else have a positive experience with sedation for dental stuff? Did you try something different, like oral meds or IV? I’m curious if anyone had side effects or felt weird after. Would love to hear if anyone else found a “magic bullet” that made the whole thing less traumatic.

Honestly, I was dreading the whole thing. The horror stories online had me convinced I'd be eating soup for a week and popping painkillers every few hours. But, weirdly enough, my tooth felt almost totally fine the next day - just a little sore if I poked at it (which, yeah, I did out of curiosity… probably not recommended). I stuck to the soft foods for like two days, then pretty much went back to normal.

The follow-up appointment was way less stressful than I thought. Dentist just checked the tooth, took a quick x-ray, and said everything looked good. I was so relieved not to need more work done.

Anybody else have a smoother recovery than expected? Did you get nervous about eating on that side again? Would love to hear if anyone actually had complications or if most people bounce back pretty fast.

I've got a tooth that's been bugging me for weeks now, and after finally dragging myself to the dentist, she said it looks like I'm gonna need a root canal. Ugh. Anyway, she offered to do it herself (she's a general dentist, but says she does root canals pretty regularly) or refer me to an endodontist, who specializes in this kinda thing.

So now I'm stuck trying to decide. On one hand, my dentist is pretty chill, I've been going to her for years, and she's done fillings and crowns for me before with no issues. It'd be convenient and probably cheaper to just have her do it. But on the other hand...it's a root canal, you know? Not exactly a walk in the park. Part of me feels like maybe I should just suck it up and see the specialist, even if it's more expensive and means another appointment somewhere else.

I've never had one before, so I'm kinda clueless here. Is it worth going to the specialist, or is it fine to stick with the regular dentist if she's confident? Curious what other people have done and how it turned out for you.
