What’s included in a routine cleaning quote?

How do you compare a quoted exam-and-cleaning fee with the likely total for the visit? The headline price may not include separately billed X-rays or fluoride, and a routine cleaning isn’t the same service as periodontal maintenance when gum disease has been diagnosed.

What’s a useful way to ask for an estimate that separates the routine fee from services recommended for a particular patient, without assuming everyone needs the same add-ons? I’m especially curious how offices explain those charges before the visit.

An itemized estimate should show the exam and routine cleaning as the base, then list each possible add-on and its separate fee. It also helps to ask which charges depend on what the exam finds and whether the office will get your approval before adding them, so you can tell the expected total from a conditional one.
