I'm a huge dental wimp, like seriously, I get sweaty palms just thinking about cleanings. My dentist suggested sedation for an upcoming filling, but I'm kinda freaked out by the idea too. Does it really make things easier or is it just trading one anxiety for another? Anyone had good or bad experiences with it?
I totally get the sweaty palms thing—just reading
made me nod. I tried nitrous once for a filling, and yeah, it helped me chill out a bit. But honestly, the extra cost was a bummer and I still felt kinda on edge. For me, it was like... less panic but not zero panic, if that makes sense? If your insurance doesn’t cover it, maybe ask about other options first.“I get sweaty palms just thinking about cleanings”

That totally makes sense. I haven’t actually tried nitrous yet, but I’ve been debating it for my first cleaning in, uh, way too long. My brain does this thing where the closer I get to the appointment, the more my hands sweat and my foot starts tapping like I’m in a rock band or something. I always pictured nitrous as some kind of magic “off switch” for anxiety, but hearing that it’s more like “turning down the volume” is actually helpful.
I did ask about options at my last consult and they mentioned a prescription pill you can take beforehand (I think it’s called Valium?) but you need someone to drive you home. That’s a whole other level of planning, but honestly, if it makes the difference between getting through it or not… might be worth it? The cost thing is real though. My insurance is super basic and doesn’t cover any extras, so I’m trying to weigh out what’s worth the stress and what’s not.
If anyone else has done the pill thing, I’d love to hear if it felt different from nitrous. At this point, I’d wear a superhero cape if it would help me survive cleanings without feeling like I’m about to pass out.
My kiddo needed a filling last year and the dentist offered nitrous. I was nervous about it, but it really did help take the edge off for her—she still gripped my hand tight, but she wasn’t in full meltdown mode like usual. I’ve never tried the pill myself, but a friend swears by it for her own appointments. She says it makes her feel a bit foggy, but way less tense than with nitrous alone. Downside is, yeah, you’re out of commission for the day and need a ride home. If cost is a factor, we found nitrous was cheaper at our clinic, but I guess it varies.
I’ve had both nitrous and oral sedation for various dental work over the years. Nitrous made me feel relaxed but still aware of everything—good for cleanings or minor stuff. The pill (I took Valium once for a crown) knocked my anxiety down several notches, but I was definitely groggy and needed someone to drive me home. No bad side effects for me, just felt a bit slow for the rest of the day. If you’re really nervous, sedation can be a game changer, but it’s a trade-off—you lose a bit of control in exchange for less panic. Cost-wise, nitrous has always been cheaper at my dentist, too.
