It’s wild how some of us want to forget the whole thing and others would rather be a little jittery but in control.

I actually lean the other way—I’d rather deal with a bit of fuzziness if it means I’m not white-knuckling the armrests the whole time. Oral sedation made my last visit so much less traumatic, even if I did lose track of time (and apparently texted my sister about spaghetti for no reason). Nitrous just didn’t cut it for me—felt like it wore off too quick and all the nerves came rushing back. Guess it really is different for everyone.

Interesting to hear how oral sedation worked for you. I get where you’re coming from—sometimes it’s just easier to let things blur a bit if it means getting through the appointment without feeling like you’re about to jump out of the chair. Personally, I actually prefer being more aware, even if that means dealing with some nerves. Nitrous oxide does the trick for me, but I know it’s not strong enough for everyone.

One thing I’ve noticed is that with oral sedation, the lingering grogginess can be a hassle after the appointment. Had a friend who needed a full day to feel “normal” again, which isn’t always practical if you’ve got work or kids waiting at home. Nitrous wears off fast, so I can drive myself and get on with my day, which is a big plus in my book.

It really does come down to what makes each person feel safest and most comfortable. Funny how there’s no one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to dental anxiety...

That quick recovery is a huge bonus for nitrous, I agree. I’ve seen patients who really value being able to leave the office and just get back to their routine. On the flip side, oral sedation does stick around longer than some folks expect—sometimes even into the next morning. Curious if anyone’s tried IV sedation? It’s a bit more involved, but I’ve noticed some people find it strikes a balance between awareness and relaxation. Just wondering if that’s been anyone’s “sweet spot” for anxiety.

We went with nitrous for my kid’s last filling, and honestly, I wouldn’t trade that quick bounce-back. The idea of IV sedation made me nervous—felt like overkill for a routine visit. Plus, I’d worry about lingering effects and needing to keep an eye on her the rest of the day. For us, the less “hangover” the better, even if it means she’s a little more aware during the appointment.

Nitrous sounds a lot less scary than IV for sure. I always wonder, though, does the gas really take the edge off enough? I get so anxious just thinking about that chair, my blood pressure probably spikes before I even sit down. Did your kid remember much afterward? I’ve heard some folks say they still feel a bit loopy for a while. I’m always afraid of feeling out of it in public… not that I haven’t embarrassed myself at the dentist before, ha.
