Middle of the night teething struggles—what actually helps?

Is there anything that actually makes teething less miserable for everyone? My 8-month-old is waking up every couple hours gnawing on his hands and just generally cranky. We’ve tried the cold washcloth thing, and those little silicone teethers, but he seems unimpressed. Has anyone found something that really works (besides Tylenol)? Or is it just a “ride it out” situation? I’m running on fumes over here.

I totally get the worry about fibers—I keep picturing my little one gnawing away and ending up with a mouthful of fuzz. We tried the cold washcloth trick once, but honestly, it just ended up on the floor after two minutes. Maybe I’m just not doing it right...
