Dentist gave me a hard acrylic night splint—felt weird at first but I guess I’m getting used to it. Some days it seems to help, other days not so much. I also tried muscle relaxers but honestly they just made me feel groggy (and still woke up sore, ugh).

Physical therapy was suggested but I haven’t pulled the trigger yet. Has anyone here found PT actually helps, or is it just more appointments and bills? Or maybe there’s some magic combo I’m missing? Curious if anyone else tried these and what actually worked for you.

Caught a news piece yesterday about a big study comparing splints and jaw surgery for TMJ issues (they called it TMD in the article, but whatever). Apparently, splints helped a ton of people avoid surgery altogether, and most folks reported less pain and fewer headaches after a few months. I always thought surgery was the “last resort,” but this study made it sound like splints are more effective than some docs give them credit for.

I’ve been dealing with jaw clicking and pain for years—tried a night guard, which helped a little, but nothing miraculous. Reading this made me wonder if I should push harder for a different kind of splint or just accept that my jaw’s gonna sound like popcorn forever. Has anyone here actually had success with splints? Or did you end up needing surgery anyway? Would love to hear if this matches up with real experiences, since news articles always make things sound so simple...

Dealing with a particularly stubborn TMJ flare-up right now and I’m honestly torn between icing my jaw or just popping some ibuprofen. I’ve tried both, but sometimes I can’t really tell if one’s actually helping more than the other or if it’s just wishful thinking. Ice gives that instant numbing relief, but I feel like it wears off pretty quick (and sometimes I end up with a weird cold ache). On the flip side, ibuprofen seems to work deeper, but it messes with my stomach if I take it for more than a couple days in a row.

Anyone else notice a difference in how long the results last, or if there’s a “right” time to use one over the other? Like, should I be icing right after eating when my jaw’s sore, or is it better to just stick with meds before bed? My dentist kind of just shrugged and said “do whatever feels best,” which… not super helpful, honestly.

Also, does anyone combine both? Or is that overkill? Just curious if there’s some magic combo out there I haven’t tried yet. Would love to hear what’s actually worked for real people, not just whatever Google says.

I'm a week out from TMJ surgery and still dealing with some swelling and ache (ugh, chewing is a distant memory right now). My surgeon said both ice and heat can help, but didn't really say which one to lean on more. I've been alternating, but honestly, I can't tell which feels better long-term. Ice is nice for the swelling, but sometimes the heat pad just feels more comforting, you know?

Curious what others found more helpful—did you stick with ice, switch to heat, or just do both? Did one actually help with the pain or stiffness more than the other? Any little tricks for making either one less annoying?

But honestly, I'm kinda hesitant about going under the knife, you know? I've heard some folks say surgery was life-changing and totally worth it, while others say they regret it or had complications. On the other hand, conservative treatments like splints, physical therapy, and exercises seem less risky but maybe not as effective long-term?

I'm curious if anyone here has tried both approaches or at least seriously considered both. Like, did you find surgery was worth the recovery time and risks? Or did conservative methods actually do the trick for you long-term? I'm trying to weigh my options carefully before making a decision, cuz honestly this jaw thing is driving me nuts...
