jaw surgery dilemma: arthroscopy vs open joint procedure?

I've been dealing with TMJ issues for a while now, and my doc mentioned two surgery options—arthroscopy (less invasive, quicker recovery, but maybe not as thorough) or open joint surgery (more invasive, longer recovery, but potentially better long-term results). I'm kinda torn. Arthroscopy sounds appealing because, you know, less downtime and all, but I'm worried I'll regret not going for the more thorough fix. Has anyone here gone through either of these? Which one did you choose and how'd it turn out?

I was in your shoes about two years ago, facing the exact same dilemma. My surgeon laid out both options clearly: arthroscopy for quicker recovery but possibly less thorough, or open joint surgery for a more comprehensive fix. After a ton of back-and-forth and reading probably way too many online stories (some helpful, some terrifying...), I went with arthroscopy.

My thinking was step-by-step: first, see if the less invasive option worked well enough, because recovery time mattered a lot to me. If it didn't provide enough relief, I could always consider open surgery later. Thankfully, arthroscopy turned out pretty well—my pain is significantly reduced, clicking mostly gone, and jaw mobility improved quite a bit. It's not perfect though; occasionally I still get mild discomfort if I chew something tough.

Looking back, I'm glad I chose arthroscopy first, but everyone's different. If your TMJ issues are severe or really impacting daily life badly, it might make sense to go straight to the bigger procedure rather than risk needing two surgeries down the line. Tough call either way...

I totally get your reasoning, but honestly, I'm leaning toward the open joint surgery myself. My cousin went through arthroscopy first, hoping for a quicker fix, but ended up needing the open procedure anyway about a year later. She said the second recovery was tougher because of scar tissue from the first surgery. I know everyone's different, but hearing her experience makes me think maybe it's better to just bite the bullet once and get it over with... Still nervous though, not gonna lie.
