After getting my wisdom teeth out, I was super paranoid about messing up the stitches. One thing that actually helped was using a kid’s soft toothbrush just to gently brush the teeth around the area (not on the stitches, obviously). Felt way less scary than my regular brush and didn’t poke at anything. Also, I swished salt water very gently a couple times a day—no crazy gargling, just letting it roll around my mouth.

I tried to avoid straws and crunchy stuff, but honestly, I caved and had some chips on day three (regret... so much regret). Learned my lesson there. Anyone else have little tricks for keeping the area clean or dealing with that weird taste you get sometimes? Would love to hear what actually worked for people, especially if you messed up like I did and survived.

Every time I get a tooth pulled, I swear the aftercare instructions get more complicated. Like, one dentist says “no rinsing for 24 hours,” another says “gently rinse after a few hours,” and then there’s all this stuff about salt water, ice packs, soft foods… but nobody can agree what counts as “soft.” Once, I ate mashed potatoes and apparently that was “too hot” and I got scolded.

I always end up paranoid about dry socket because the internet makes it sound like if you sneeze wrong, you’ll get it. But then my cousin literally drank through a straw after her extraction and she was fine (not that I’d chance it).

Does anyone else feel like they’re playing dental roulette with this stuff? What do you actually do after getting a tooth out, and have you ever had issues following the instructions?

Had my wisdom tooth out last week (the bottom one, impacted, so it was a bit of a production), and I’m honestly surprised at how much longer it’s taking to feel “normal” compared to when I had a regular molar pulled a couple years ago. With the molar, I was eating pretty normally in like three days, barely any swelling, just annoying saltwater rinses. This time? My jaw still feels sore, I’ve got some bruising, and I’m still babying that side when I chew.

I’m curious if other people have noticed a big difference between recovering from a simple pull vs. a surgical extraction. Like, do you find the surgical ones just always take way longer, or is it just me being unlucky this round? My dentist said 7-10 days for “most” of the healing but honestly, I’m on day 8 and still not loving it.

Also—side note—did anyone else get those weird stitches that dissolve on their own? The feeling of those things in my mouth is driving me nuts. I don’t remember having them before.

Would you rather deal with a straightforward extraction again, or is the surgical route not as bad as I’m making it out to be? Curious what’s been easier (or harder) for folks.

Then suddenly, you remember—life exists outside your living room. When did you all start doing normal stuff again after getting teeth yanked out? I’m on day three post-wisdom extraction and honestly, brushing my teeth feels like an Olympic sport.

I keep getting conflicting advice—my dentist said “take it easy,” but my roommate claims she was eating pizza by day two (which sounds fake, right?). Anyway, I’m itching to get back to jogging, but also terrified I’ll mess up the healing. Anyone ever try going for a run too soon? Or tried something dumb like popcorn and regretted it?

Would love to hear how everyone navigated those first awkward days of “am I healed or am I just impatient?”

The dentist gave me the usual “don’t spit, don’t suck on straws” speech, but honestly, I’m still pretty sore and paranoid about doing something wrong. I’ve been sticking to soft foods (mashed potatoes are my new best friend) and trying not to poke around with my tongue too much.

But I feel like there’s gotta be more tricks or products out there that make recovery less miserable? Like, is there a specific mouth rinse that actually helps with healing, or are those just marketing fluff? Also, how long did you all wait before eating “normal” food again? My jaw feels weirdly stiff too—normal or nah?

Would love to hear what helped others get through it without losing their minds. Any little comforts or hacks you swear by?

I’ve had both a wisdom tooth and a regular molar pulled, and honestly, I can’t decide which recovery was rougher. With my wisdom tooth, my face swelled up like a chipmunk for days and I got that gross taste in my mouth—turns out it was dry socket (wouldn’t wish that on anyone). But with the regular molar, it hurt less at first but then I got this weird throbbing pain a week later that freaked me out. Ended up being a little infection, so antibiotics for me.

What’s everyone else’s experience? Did you notice different signs of complications depending on the type of tooth pulled? Like, is swelling and bruising more normal for one than the other? Or does it just depend on luck (or maybe how well you follow the salt water rinse thing)? Curious if folks found one recovery way harder than the other.

Quick poll time: when you’ve had a tooth yanked (wisdom teeth, molar, whatever), what’s your favorite way to deal with the chipmunk-cheek thing? I swear, last time I tried the whole “ice pack every 20 minutes” routine and still looked like I lost a fight with a beehive. Some people swear by frozen peas, others are all about anti-inflammatories or just sleeping upright.

Here’s what I’m curious about—
- Ice packs (classic)
- Warm compresses (after the first day?)
- Meds (ibuprofen, etc.)
- Just toughing it out and hiding from mirrors

If you’ve got a weird hack, spill it. Or if nothing works and you just binge Netflix with your face wrapped up, honestly, same. What actually helps you feel less puffy—or at least less miserable?
