Why is post-extraction care so confusing?

Man, the struggle is real. I get where you’re coming from, but honestly, I kinda think the stress is worth it—at least in the first couple days. My nephew had a tooth yanked last summer and my sister was all chill, giving him whatever he wanted (nothing super crunchy, but still). Next thing you know, he’s complaining about pain and there was a bit of bleeding. Cue panic mode. She ended up calling the dentist and they were like, “Yeah, maybe hold off on the popcorn and chips for a bit…”

I get that it feels like overkill sometimes. Like, are we really supposed to be blending soup and serving it with a straw? But then again, I’d rather deal with a few days of food boredom than risk anything getting infected or messed up. Kids bounce back quick, but their mouths are drama queens after stuff like that.

Honestly though, the internet does not help. You search one thing and suddenly you’re deep in a rabbit hole of horror stories and weird home remedies. I just stick to what the dentist says now, even if it sounds kinda ridiculous. Better safe than sorry. And hey, mac and cheese is basically medicine for the soul anyway… as long as it’s not straight outta the oven and burning hot.

But yeah, sometimes I do wonder if we’re all just winging it and hoping for the best. Wouldn’t be the first time parenting felt like a total guessing game.

Totally agree with this. I always think of it like a checklist—first 24 hours: soft foods, no straws, avoid rinsing. After that, slowly add in more variety. The rules feel strict but every time I’ve tried to “just wing it,” I regretted it. My kid once snuck a tortilla chip and we were back at square one with bleeding. Not fun. I guess the “overkill” is just a way to play it safe, even if it feels a bit much in the moment.
