I totally feel you on the scare tactics. My dentist tried to show me a slideshow of “what happens if you don’t floss,” and it was basically a horror movie for gums. Didn’t faze me until my own teeth started feeling a little… wobbly? Suddenly, I’m flossing like it’s an Olympic sport. It’s wild how none of the warnings hit home until it’s your own mouth on the line. Honestly, if someone had just said, “Hey, this actually happened to me,” I might’ve listened sooner.

That’s exactly it. I used to brush off all those “this could happen to you” talks, too. Didn’t really start taking it seriously until I had to get a crown after ignoring a cavity for way too long. Suddenly, all those dentist horror stories felt very real. It’s funny how a little pain or a loose tooth will make you rethink your habits overnight. I wish I’d listened sooner, but I guess sometimes you need that wake-up call.

Can totally relate to that sudden shift in mindset. I was always skeptical about all the “don’t mess with your teeth” warnings, especially with those viral DIY things floating around. But after my first real dentist visit—just for a cleaning, nothing major—I left feeling weirdly anxious about every little twinge. It’s like you don’t realize how fragile teeth are until you’re sitting in that chair, thinking, what if I messed something up already? Part of me wonders if all the scare stories are exaggerated, but then you see people actually losing teeth over these hacks… makes it feel way too real.

That hits home. I used to think teeth were just these solid little blocks that could take anything. But after seeing some of those “DIY braces” horror stories online, I started paying way more attention to what’s actually going on in my mouth. It’s wild how a simple cleaning can make you hyper-aware of every click or ache.

I’ll admit, I tried one of those whitening hacks from TikTok once—nothing super sketchy, just baking soda and lemon juice. My gums stung for days after. Never again. Now I’m all about the professional stuff, even if it takes longer or costs more.

Do you think social media makes things worse? Like, would people even try these hacks if they didn’t see influencers doing them? It feels like everyone wants quick results and forgets their teeth aren’t invincible...

Yeah, I totally get what you mean about becoming hyper-aware after a cleaning. It’s like every tiny twinge suddenly feels suspicious. I used to be so casual with my teeth—chewing ice, opening bags with them (yikes). Now I worry if I even brush too hard. Social media definitely adds fuel to the fire. You see these “miracle” results and start wondering if you’re missing out, even though deep down you know it’s probably a bad idea. I learned the hard way after trying one of those charcoal powders—my gums were not happy. Never again...
