I get what you mean about the trade-offs. I went with clear aligners (Invisalign, specifically) in college after years of putting off braces because I just couldn’t handle the idea of all that metal. Honestly, for the first few weeks, I was hyper-aware of them, like every time I talked or laughed. But I noticed most people didn’t even realize I was wearing anything unless I pointed it out.

That being said, the whole “taking them out to eat” thing is awkward, especially in public. I always felt weird popping them out at a restaurant or at a friend’s place. There’s also the pressure of brushing your teeth before putting them back in, which isn’t always convenient. I remember one time at a party, I just didn’t eat anything because I didn’t want to deal with it. Kind of ridiculous in hindsight, but social anxiety is real.

Braces seem more visible, but at least you don’t have to think about removing them or keeping track of tiny trays. I had a friend who lost her aligners twice at school lunch, and that was a whole ordeal with her parents and the orthodontist. But then again, I’ve heard stories about broken brackets and wires poking into cheeks, so it’s not like braces are hassle-free either.

I’d say for me, aligners made me less self-conscious overall, but only after I got used to the routine. The initial phase was a bit stressful, but it faded. I do wonder though—did anyone actually feel more confident with braces after a while? Or maybe just stopped caring what people thought? I always assumed it would bother me the whole time, but maybe that’s not true for everyone.

Totally get what you mean about the aligner routine. I did braces as a teen and, honestly, after a few months I just stopped caring how they looked. At first, I felt super awkward, but eventually it was just part of my face, if that makes sense. The downside was definitely the random wire pokes and food getting stuck, but I didn’t have to worry about losing anything at lunch. I do think you adjust either way, but I can see why aligners would be less stressful for some people.
