I’m just starting with aligners and honestly, I didn’t realize how much I’d overthink the whole “taking them out in public” thing. First lunch at work, I sat in the bathroom for ages trying to be discreet, but it felt even weirder hiding. With braces, I’d probably just feel exposed all the time, but at least you don’t have to do this awkward removal routine. I guess there’s no perfect option for feeling totally chill about it… just different types of awkward.

I get what you mean about the aligner removal circus. The first time I had to pop mine out at a restaurant, I felt like a raccoon rifling through trash—just hoping nobody was paying attention. But, honestly, after a few weeks, I stopped caring so much. It’s like, yeah, I’m fishing something out of my mouth—deal with it, coworkers.

But here’s the thing: I actually felt more self-conscious with braces. Maybe it’s just me getting older and grumpier about stuff stuck in my teeth, but every time I smiled with braces, I felt like a teenager all over again (and not in the fun, “hey, my knees don’t hurt” way). There’s something about that metallic grin that made me want to keep my lips glued shut. At least with aligners, most folks don’t notice unless you’re mid-salad extraction.

The bathroom routine does get old fast though. At some point I just started carrying a little case and doing the quick “under-the-table pop-out” move before meals. Not exactly James Bond-level stealth, but it beats loitering in the bathroom for ages. Plus, less chance of someone knocking on the door asking if you’re alright.

Braces are definitely more “what you see is what you get”—no hiding those. But with aligners, it’s more of a choose-your-own-adventure awkwardness: do you want to feel exposed all day or just have a few awkward moments at lunch? Personally, I’d rather have those weird moments and then forget about it.

But hey, maybe it’s an age thing—I care less about looking silly now than when I was younger. If someone wants to judge me for dental gear at this point, they can take a number behind everyone else judging my reading glasses and orthopedic shoes...

I actually had the opposite experience—aligners made me more self-conscious, weirdly enough. With braces, it was obvious what was going on, so I didn’t feel like I had to explain myself. But with aligners, people would sometimes stare and try to figure out what was in my mouth, or ask if I was wearing a retainer. Plus, I always worried about having to take them out in front of people. Maybe it’s just me, but the “invisible” part felt more awkward than just owning the metal mouth. Anyone else feel that way?

My kid felt the same way, actually. With braces, it’s like, “Yep, I’ve got braces, moving on.” But with aligners, it was always,

“people would sometimes stare and try to figure out what was in my mouth”
—definitely more awkward at lunchtime. Taking them out in public became a whole thing. I thought aligners would be less noticeable, but sometimes the mystery made it worse!

That’s exactly what my daughter went through with aligners. She was so anxious about taking them out at lunch, especially when friends would look over trying to figure out what she was doing. With regular braces, it felt more “out in the open”—no surprises, everyone knew what was up. I honestly thought aligners would be easier for her self-esteem, but the whole remove/clean routine in public turned into a stress point. It’s funny how something meant to be discreet can actually draw more attention sometimes...
