I keep feeling like the wax is going to fall off mid-conversation or while I’m sleeping. Does anyone else worry about accidentally swallowing it?

That’s such a common worry—honestly, you’re not alone there. Most dental wax is non-toxic, so if you do swallow a bit, it’s not dangerous (just annoying, I get it). The brushes... I tell people to stash extras everywhere: purse, car, desk drawer, even jacket pockets. It sounds silly, but it really helps when one inevitably vanishes. And yeah, eating turns into a bit of a production for a while, but it does get easier as you go. Hang in there.

You’re definitely not the only one. That feeling of “is it still there?” drove me nuts for the first couple weeks. I actually did swallow a piece once in my sleep—woke up in the morning and realized it was gone. Not my favorite breakfast, but nothing happened. The non-toxic part is reassuring, but yeah, it’s still weird.

I’ve found that warming the wax between your fingers for a bit before sticking it on helps it stay put longer. Some brands are stickier than others too—have you tried switching? The stuff from the ortho’s office was way better than what I got at the drugstore, oddly enough.

That’s a solid tip. I thought I was being over-prepared keeping a pack in my glove box, but those little brushes disappear faster than socks in a dryer. I started using a small pill case for them so the bristles don’t get all gross at the bottom of my bag.

Eating is still a circus act for me, honestly. I tried to avoid crunchy stuff at first, but eventually just accepted that sometimes you have to excuse yourself mid-meal to go deal with random food bits. It gets less embarrassing over time. If you’re worried about wax during meals, I usually just take it out before eating and put fresh on after brushing.

Hang in there—it really does get easier. The first few months are the worst, but after a while you stop noticing most of it. And hey, you’ll have some good stories when it’s all done.

I totally get the anxiety about the wax. My kid’s been through this and I swear, every night I’d check to make sure it hadn’t fallen off or gotten swallowed. It’s reassuring to hear it’s non-toxic, but still... not something you want to think about at 2am. We found that using the wax straight from the ortho’s office made a big difference, like you mentioned.

“The stuff from the ortho’s office was way better than what I got at the drugstore, oddly enough.”
That’s been true for us too.

The little brushes are everywhere in our house and car now. I used to worry about germs, so we keep them in a tiny zip baggie. Eating is still tricky—my kid just takes the wax out for meals and puts it back after brushing, like you said. It does get easier, but those first few months are a learning curve for everyone.

That wax is honestly the unsung hero of braces, but I’m with you—the ortho’s stuff just sticks better and doesn’t crumble like the drugstore kind. I’ve tried both, and the difference is weirdly huge. I keep a pack in my bag at all times now. About those little brushes, do you find they wear out super fast? I go through them like crazy, especially if I’m eating out or at work. I’m still hunting for a brand that lasts longer... anyone found one that’s less flimsy?

Those little brushes are my nemesis right now. I swear, I go through a pack in like a week—especially after lunch at work. I tried switching brands but honestly, they all seem to get bent out of shape after just a couple uses. Maybe I’m brushing too hard? Or maybe it’s just the universe’s way of making sure I always have something to stress about.

But yeah, the ortho wax is next-level compared to the stuff from the store. I didn’t even know there was a difference until my first wire poked me and the drugstore wax just... fell apart. Now I hoard the good stuff like it’s gold.

If anyone ever finds a brush that doesn’t fall apart instantly, please invent a time machine and tell past me. Until then, guess we’re all just carrying backup packs everywhere we go.
