If anyone ever finds a brush that doesn’t fall apart instantly, please invent a time machine and tell past me.

I hear you on the brush situation—those things are like the socks of dental care: always disappearing or getting trashed way too fast. But I’ve actually had a bit of a different experience with them. I used to go through packs like candy until one of my colleagues pointed out that I was using the wrong size for my brackets. Turns out, if the brush is just a little too big, it bends and frays immediately. I switched to a slightly smaller size (even though it felt like it wouldn’t do much), and suddenly they lasted way longer.

Also, about brushing too hard—yeah, that’s super common. It’s tempting to really go at it, especially after eating something sticky, but gentle circles actually work better and keep the brushes alive a little longer. Not saying it’ll make them immortal, but you might get an extra day or two.

And totally agree on the wax—the “official” ortho stuff is in a league of its own. The drugstore version is basically useless once you’ve tried the real deal.

That’s interesting, because my ortho actually recommended a bigger size for “better cleaning.” Honestly, I think it just made everything wear out faster and got stuff stuck between my brackets. Switched to a smaller one too—way less hassle. Also, 100% with you on the official wax. The generic stuff just crumbles for me, especially if I try to eat anything.

I’m starting to wonder if the “bigger brush = better cleaning” thing is just a myth. My ortho gave me the large ones too, and it felt like trying to fit a mop between my wires. They’d get all bent out of shape after just a few uses, and honestly, half the time I ended up poking my gums or getting food wedged in even worse. I switched to the smaller ones last week and it’s been way less stressful—plus, they actually last longer, which surprised me.

About the wax—same here. I tried the cheap stuff from the pharmacy and it just kind of melted away or broke apart as soon as I ate anything remotely warm. The official wax is the only one that stays put for me, but I keep worrying I’ll run out before my next appointment. Has anyone figured out a good backup? Or maybe a trick for making the generic stuff work better? This whole process is so much more complicated than I expected...

Totally get this. Those big brushes are like wrestling a porcupine in your mouth. I’m all about the tiny ones now—less drama, less gum stabbing. As for wax, tried ChapStick as a last resort once... wouldn’t recommend unless you like minty wire sandwiches.

Yeah, those jumbo brushes are wild—felt like I was scrubbing a grill, not cleaning my teeth. Tiny interdental brushes have been a game changer for me too; less mess, way fewer accidental jabs. I’ve tried the ChapStick trick in a pinch but honestly, nothing beats actual ortho wax for comfort. Funny how you start getting picky about wax brands after a while... some are just way softer than others. Braces as an adult really is its own adventure.
