Imagine you grab your trusty water bottle after a workout, take a sip, and suddenly realize it tastes... weird. Like, kinda musty or plasticky? Would you just wash it again, or do you toss it? How do you tell if it’s actually “gone bad”?

Ugh, I’ve been there. Took a swig from my bottle after a long hike and it tasted like…old gym socks? Not great. I usually give it a deep clean with hot water and baking soda, but if the smell sticks around or the plastic feels weird, I’m honestly done with it. Mold and bacteria can get sneaky, and nobody needs that near their mouth. Sometimes it’s just not worth the risk—mouth health is too important for me to gamble on a funky bottle.

For real, it’s like those things have a sixth sense for lurking in bottle crevices. I had a “smart” bottle once (yeah, it tracked hydration...and also, apparently, biofilm growth). Even with all the bells and whistles, if you don’t scrub every gasket and lid nook, the funk sets in. I’ve started tossing plastic ones at the first whiff of weirdness—metal bottles seem to hold up better for me. Not worth risking a science experiment in my mouth.
