When your favorite water bottle starts to smell funky
“No matter how high-tech the gadget, some manual cleaning always seems necessary...”
Right? I’ve got one of those “UV self-cleaning” bottles and, honestly, it’s more of a gimmick than a solution. Dishwasher top rack is my go-to too - nothing quite like the nuclear-hot rinse to get rid of that mysterious funk. Ever notice how the silicone gaskets are the first to start smelling if you forget them? I swear they’re like stink magnets. Anyone else just end up boiling their lids sometimes out of desperation?

Honestly, I’ve had weird luck with dishwashers. Sometimes my bottle comes out smelling even stranger, like a mix of old soup and detergent. I actually trust the UV thing more for day-to-day freshness, but yeah, it’s not magic. As for the gaskets - total stink traps. I tried soaking mine in vinegar water overnight and it helped a bit, but boiling makes me nervous they’ll warp. Anyone else just use baking soda and call it a day?
Baking soda’s been my go-to for years, mostly because it’s cheap and I can’t smell vinegar without thinking of Easter eggs. I’ve had a few gaskets go weird after boiling, so I just scrub and hope for the best. The UV thing sounds fancy but I’m not sure my old bottles are worth the investment.

Honestly, I’m right there with you. If my bottle cost less than my lunch, it’s not getting a spa day with a UV wand. Baking soda’s always done the trick for me too - plus, scrubbing counts as cardio, right?
Totally get it - my favorite bottle is a cheapo from a conference years ago, and I can’t bring myself to toss it. I’ve never tried those UV gadgets either. A little baking soda and elbow grease usually does the job for me. Plus, all that scrubbing makes me feel like I earned my next snack break. If it still smells after that, I’ll just let it air out on a sunny windowsill. Sometimes simple really is best.
