Yeah, your dentist isn't just being overly cautious—heat too soon can definitely backfire. I learned this the hard way after my own bone graft last year. Thought I'd be clever and switch to a warm compress on day two because, you know, warmth feels soothing, right? Big mistake. Within an hour, my cheek puffed up like a chipmunk hoarding snacks for winter. 😂

Here's the deal: ice helps constrict blood vessels, reducing swelling and inflammation early on. Heat, on the other hand, increases blood flow—which sounds nice in theory, but when you're freshly healing, it just ramps up swelling and pain. After about 3-4 days, once the initial swelling calms down, warmth can actually help with stiffness and healing. But trust me, stick with ice at first. Your face (and your selfies) will thank you later...

Hmm, interesting...my dentist actually recommended alternating ice and heat after the first 48 hours. I was skeptical at first, but honestly, it seemed to ease the stiffness without causing extra swelling. Maybe it's different for everyone? Did your dentist specifically advise against heat early on, or was that just your own experience? Curious now if there's a standard protocol or if it's more case-by-case...

My dentist actually gave similar advice—ice first to get swelling down, then gentle warmth after a couple days to ease stiffness and improve circulation. She mentioned that heat too early could increase swelling, but after the initial inflammation settles, it can really help with healing. Seems like there's some variation depending on individual healing rates or specific procedures...probably best to follow whatever feels most comfortable for you and your situation. Hope you're feeling better soon!

My dentist actually had a slightly different take on the heat thing. After my bone graft, she suggested sticking mostly with ice for the first couple days, but when I mentioned stiffness, she said gentle jaw movements and stretches were better than heat pads. She thought heat might sometimes increase discomfort or swelling even after initial inflammation settles. I guess it really does vary from person to person...I ended up trying both and found gentle movement worked best for me. Hope you find relief soon, it's no fun dealing with this stuff.

I had a similar experience after my bone graft. Ice definitely helped at first, but after a couple days, I noticed my jaw felt really stiff and uncomfortable. My dentist also recommended gentle stretches and movements rather than heat. She explained that heat can sometimes make swelling linger longer, even if it feels good initially. I tried some slow jaw-opening exercises and gentle side-to-side movements, and honestly, it made a noticeable difference. Hang in there...it does get better with time.
