It’s surprising how many little things come up that no one warns you about. I keep wondering if there’s some secret list of side effects that only people with braces know.

You’re definitely not alone there. The metallic taste and the squeaking both threw me for a loop too. It’s wild how something as simple as drinking tea can suddenly feel so awkward. But honestly, it’s impressive how you’re pushing through all the weirdness—those small annoyances really do add up. Just remember, every adjustment is a step closer to that final smile. Hang in there, you’re doing great.

My kid was so confused the first time her teeth felt “itchy” after a tightening—she kept asking if that was normal. I didn’t even know teeth could itch! The wax has been a lifesaver for those random pokey wires, though. Honestly, I think we’ve both learned way more about teeth than we ever expected… but you’re right, every little step is worth it in the end.

Is it weird that I actually worry about the wax a little? Like, I know it helps with the wires, but sometimes I get anxious that if my kid uses too much, she’ll end up swallowing some by accident. My dentist said it’s safe, but still... can’t help but overthink it. Did you ever have issues with the wax not sticking when things got really sore? My daughter gets frustrated when it keeps falling off, especially after eating.

Also, about the itchy feeling—my kid described something similar, but she said it was more like her whole mouth was buzzing. I started to wonder if that was a sign something was wrong, but apparently it’s just part of the deal. Still makes me nervous every time she mentions a new sensation. Is there a point where it’s not normal anymore? Or am I just being paranoid?

I do agree that you learn way more than you ever wanted to about teeth and wires and all that... but sometimes I wish there was a manual for all these weird side effects.

My kid swallowed a chunk of wax once and I panicked for like five minutes, but honestly, nothing happened except maybe a slightly softer poop (TMI?). The buzzing thing freaked me out too—she described it as “ants in my gums.” I kept thinking it was an allergy or something, but the ortho just shrugged and said it’s nerves waking up. I swear, braces should come with a hotline for worried parents. You’re not paranoid, just human.

That “ants in my gums” description hits home. After my second tightening, I remember feeling like I had a cell phone buzzing in my mouth—super weird, almost like a low-level electric current. I actually called the office, convinced something was wrong, but they told me the same thing about nerves. Guess it’s more common than they let on.

As for swallowing wax, my younger brother did that all the time. He thought it was funny to see if he could eat it without anyone noticing. Never seemed to bother him, but I always wondered if it could cause problems down the line. Maybe not, judging by your experience.

One thing I never expected: after a really tough adjustment, I’d sometimes get headaches—not just jaw pain, but actual tension headaches. No one warned me about that part. Did anyone else’s kids complain about headaches or earaches after tightening? Or is that just a me thing?
