How much is too much when it comes to fluoride rinse?

I totally get the “electric” feeling—my mouth is like a drama queen when it comes to strong rinses. Tried doubling up on fluoride rinse once, thinking I’d get super teeth. Nope. Just got sore gums and a weird taste all day. Lesson learned: the directions aren’t just a suggestion.

I’ve definitely learned the hard way that more isn’t always better with rinses. I tried using a little extra once, thinking it’d help my braces, but my mouth felt raw for hours. Directions really do matter... it’s not worth the discomfort.

I get what you’re saying, but I’ve honestly never had that issue with using a bit more rinse. Maybe it depends on the brand or your mouth’s sensitivity? I actually started doubling up on the fluoride rinse when my dentist suggested it for my enamel (I had a bunch of little white spots). Didn’t feel raw or anything—just a weird aftertaste sometimes.

Are you sure it was the extra rinse and not something else, like maybe a new toothpaste or eating something acidic right after? I know the directions are there for a reason, but sometimes it feels like they’re just covering their bases. Anyone else here told by their ortho or dentist to use more than the label says? Just trying to figure out if I’m the odd one out...

I’m with you—sometimes I feel like the directions are just super cautious. My dentist had me use extra rinse for a while too, after I got my braces off and had some spots. Didn’t really notice any burning or soreness, just that funky aftertaste you mentioned. Maybe it’s a sensitivity thing? I’ve definitely noticed certain toothpastes make my mouth feel weird, but the rinse never did. Guess everyone’s mouth is its own little science experiment...

- Totally get what you mean about everyone's mouth being its own experiment. I swear my teeth have a mind of their own sometimes.
- Directions on those rinses always seem super dramatic, like “DO NOT SWALLOW!”—makes me feel like I’m handling radioactive waste or something.
- I never got that burning either, but the aftertaste is real. It kinda lingers, like old mint gum or something weird.
- Toothpaste is a whole other game for me. Certain ones just make my tongue tingle in a bad way. No idea why, but I just stick to the boring basic stuff now.
- My dentist said the extra rinse was just to be safe after braces—guess those white spots freak them out more than me.
- I honestly wonder if it’s one of those things where some people are just more sensitive? Like how some folks can eat ice cream straight from the freezer and others get brain freeze instantly.
- Anyway, I figure as long as I’m not chugging it like Gatorade, my teeth should survive... right?
