Spacing them out really does seem to help, especially for kids. I’ve seen families try to get multiple root canals done in a single visit just to “get it over with,” but honestly, that can be overwhelming—physically and emotionally. Kids bounce back pretty well, but even adults can be wiped out after just one.

Soups and ice cream are a lifesaver for those first couple of days. I remember when my niece went through this; she lived on mashed potatoes and yogurt for nearly a week. She got pretty creative with smoothie flavors too. It’s a rough patch, but it does get more manageable after the first one or two, like you said. The anticipation is often worse than the actual procedure, at least in my experience.

One thing I’d add—if you’re able to, ask the dentist about pain management options and what to expect after each session. Sometimes just knowing what’s normal (like swelling or sensitivity) can take a lot of anxiety out of the process. And don’t feel bad about taking it slow. There’s no prize for powering through all six at once.

It’s tough watching your kid go through dental work, but you’re right—once they get through the initial recovery, it becomes more routine. Hang in there; you’re definitely not alone in this.

Totally agree about spacing them out. I’m actually in the middle of this right now—just had my first root canal last week, and honestly, it wasn’t as terrible as I’d worked it up to be in my head, but I was wiped out for a couple days after. Can’t even imagine trying to do more than one at a time, especially for a kid. The anticipation really is the worst part... I barely slept the night before.

Food-wise, soft stuff is definitely the way to go. I ended up eating a lot of scrambled eggs and applesauce (never thought I’d crave applesauce as an adult). Ice packs helped too when my jaw started aching later in the day.

One thing that surprised me was how much just talking with my dentist beforehand helped. They walked me through what would hurt and what wouldn’t, which made me feel a bit less panicky. I still get anxious thinking about the next one, but knowing what to expect makes it more manageable.

Hang in there—it’s rough but you’re right, it does get easier after the first one or two.

Spacing them out made a huge difference for me too. I tried doing two close together years ago, and honestly, I just felt drained for days. The mental buildup is always worse than the actual procedure—my stomach does flips the night before every time. I still get nervous, even after several of these, and I’ll admit I had to psych myself up just to walk into the office.

Soft foods are a lifesaver. Mashed potatoes and yogurt became my go-to, though I never thought I’d be so picky about textures at my age. One thing I’d add: I kept a heating pad nearby for jaw stiffness—it helped more than the ice for me. And you’re right, a dentist who talks you through it makes all the difference. I still worry, but at least I know what’s coming each time... even if I wish I didn’t have to go back.

I’m scheduled for my first root canal next week and honestly, this thread is both reassuring and making me a little more nervous at the same time. The mental buildup part is hitting home right now—my brain keeps running through worst-case scenarios. I hadn’t thought about using a heating pad; I always assumed ice was the go-to, but I hate that numb feeling. Did you find the heating pad helped with swelling too, or just the stiffness? And did you have any issues with eating even soft foods right after, or was it more of a gradual thing? Just trying to prepare for every possible angle…

I totally get the overthinking—my brain was in overdrive before mine too. For me, the heating pad was more about easing jaw stiffness than swelling. Eating soft foods wasn’t too bad, but I did stick to mashed potatoes and yogurt for a day or two. Did your dentist give you any tips for aftercare?
