That’s a lot for anyone to go through, especially all at once. Did you notice if your jaw pain eased up after the first day, or did it stick around longer? My kiddo had two done last year and even with the bite block, he complained about his jaw feeling “locked” for most of the evening. Alternating ice and heat sounds interesting—did you do that right away, or wait a bit? Always looking for ways to help him feel better next time.

Jaw pain after a root canal can definitely linger, especially if there were multiple procedures or longer sessions involved. When I had two done back-to-back, my jaw felt pretty stiff for about 48 hours, mostly from keeping it open so long with the bite block. I tried alternating ice and heat, but honestly, I found ice was more helpful in the first 12 hours—heat seemed to make things ache more right away, so I waited until the next day before switching it up.

One thing that helped was doing some gentle jaw stretches (just opening and closing slowly) after the numbness wore off. Not pushing it, just enough to keep things from locking up. I get why your kiddo felt “locked”—it’s like your muscles forget how to relax after all that tension. If you’re looking for ways to help him next time, maybe try shorter sessions if possible or ask about breaks during the procedure. It’s a lot to sit through at any age.

Interesting—my dentist actually told me to skip the heat altogether for the first couple days, since it can sometimes make inflammation worse. I know some folks swear by it, but for me, sticking with ice and just letting my jaw rest seemed to help more than doing stretches too soon. I get wanting to keep things moving, but sometimes less is more, you know? Especially after a marathon session like that...

I totally get where you’re coming from. After my first few root canals, I learned the hard way that heat made my face puff up like a chipmunk. Ice packs and just chilling out (literally and figuratively) worked so much better for me. Sometimes you just gotta listen to your body—resting is underrated, especially when your mouth’s been through the wringer.

My kiddo just had their first root canal and I swear I was more nervous than they were. We did the ice pack routine too—worked wonders, and honestly, it gave us an excuse to binge cartoons together. Heat never helped us either, just made things feel worse. Resting up is key, even if it means a few extra lazy days on the couch.
