Comparing root canal quotes when the crown isn’t included

I’m comparing estimates for an initial root canal and want to make sure I’m not comparing a bare procedure fee with a complete treatment plan. The tooth type matters here, since a molar may involve different treatment time and restoration needs than a front tooth.
For each endodontist, I’m planning to ask whether the quote includes:
- Consultation and diagnostic X-rays or 3D imaging
- Local anesthetic and any sedation
- The temporary filling or temporary restoration
- Follow-up visits and post-treatment X-rays
- Any adjustment if the tooth remains painful or the canal anatomy is more complicated
- A guarantee, and what happens if retreatment is needed
I’ll also confirm whether the final filling, onlay, or crown is billed separately by the endodontist or by my general dentist. A lower root-canal quote may not be lower overall if imaging, a temporary restoration, and the permanent crown are added later.
Would you compare the estimates by requesting one itemized total for the full pathway, or keep the endodontist’s fee separate from the restorative dentist’s quote? Also, what wording would you use to clarify retreatment fees, especially if this is an initial treatment rather than retreatment of an older root canal?

For the guarantee question, I’d ask for the exclusions in writing rather than just whether a guarantee is offered. In particular, does the retreatment policy exclude a missed canal, a root fracture, or a new problem such as decay? Those exceptions can make two apparently similar guarantees quite different.
I’d still request an itemized estimate for the full pathway, while keeping the endodontist’s fee and the restorative dentist’s fee separately identified. That preserves a useful comparison without implying that the endodontist is responsible for the crown or final restoration.
