What should I have asked before my root canal?

I totally get what you mean about the temp crowns. I was so paranoid about eating anything, I basically lived on mashed potatoes and yogurt for a week. My dentist didn’t mention a repair kit—wish I’d known that was a thing! Honestly, for what we pay, you’d think they’d give clearer instructions or at least a backup plan if it pops off. The anxiety of possibly swallowing it was real...

Honestly, I wasn’t as worried about swallowing mine as much as just losing it somewhere in a sandwich. My dentist actually did give me a little info sheet, but it was mostly “don’t chew gum” and “call us if it falls off.” Didn’t mention a repair kit either—maybe that’s more common in some places? I did eat pizza with mine (risky, I know), and somehow survived. Maybe they should hand out temp crowns with a side of instructions *and* a tiny tube of superglue... kidding (sort of).

I remember being so paranoid about eating anything remotely chewy after my temp crown. My dentist gave me a list of foods to avoid, but honestly, it was pretty vague—just “nothing sticky or hard.” I did end up losing mine in a salad (of all things), and had to awkwardly fish it out. Never got offered a repair kit either, but I’ve heard some places do that. In hindsight, I wish I’d asked more about what to do if the temp came off at night or over the weekend... those instructions would’ve been way more helpful than just “call us.”

Yeah, I get what you mean about the vague food list. Mine just said “avoid crunchy stuff,” but didn’t mention things like salads or even bread with a tough crust. I ended up losing my temp crown on a sandwich—super annoying. Honestly, I wish I’d asked about getting a temp cement kit or at least what to do if it popped off after hours. Dental emergencies always seem to happen on weekends, right?

You’d think “avoid crunchy stuff” would cover it, but apparently sandwiches are a stealth hazard no one warns you about. I lost my temp crown to a slice of pizza. Not even a thick crust—just the cheese stuck to the temp and off it came. I agree, the food list is way too vague. I ended up calling the emergency line, which just told me to “be careful” until Monday.

I did pick up a temp cement kit from the pharmacy after that, but honestly, I wish the dentist had suggested it in the first place. It’s not like I would’ve guessed I needed to be suspicious of bread. And yeah, dental stuff never falls apart at a convenient time. If they handed out a “what if things go wrong at 10pm on Saturday” sheet, I’d be all for it.

It’s weird how much you learn after the fact. Next time, I’m asking for an actual list—like, “no sandwiches, no pizza, maybe just soup.”
